I cannot speak for everyone but, I am almost positive that I am not alone in my thinking. This problem, if it is a problem, needs a resolution.

1) If its financial, I am willing to cough up a few bucks in assistance... NO STRINGS ATTACHED!

2) If it is a bug in the system (which I am nearly sure it is) then we need Lep to scan the code.

3) If it is its members (which I am positive it is) then we need to promote better usage of our resources.

Now, I know that #2 and #3 look contrary but I am not discounting any possibility and I am acknowledging that both are a possibility. I just am leaning more toward #3.

Also, #3 could be associated with #2 if the bug is one that our members are taking advantage of. Then both would be true.

Now, on a certain level we cannot do anything because the code is 100% Lep's domain, and his influence is the only solution. On the other, at a user level we can prevent this happening again. Either by throwing money at it till it goes away, or finding out if its even correctable by doing so. As a wise person mentioned yesterday, "If it is a bug, no amount of cash will stop up the hole" (paraphrasing)

My personal belief is its a combination of poor posting practices (over large screenshots @ about 10%) and hotlinking to other sites (About 80%) with the rest of our bandwidth usage going to normal every day posting and surfing. NOW I KNOW that these numbers are purely for reference purposes, and are probably not even close to actual, but it is my STRONG opinion that hotlinking is our major cause of grief here.

The solution is simple IMO.
1st, we need to stop doing so... PERIOD.
2nd, Lep needs to code the site to prevent it.

This will, or could solve our troubles and then we are left with throwing money at the site. (Which I would do gladly)

So, If anyone here is aware of anyone else hotlinking PLEASE ask them to desist immediately.

Opinions/Views????????

if its a money issue, ive told lep for a few years now i'd be happy to pitch in every month, no strings, to advance the cause... i think he never took me up on it mostly out of pride, which i completely understand....but, the offer is still there ....hell, ill send him a bathrobe so he doesnt catch "his death" as he sits skinless in front of his "control center".... :heee:

I must admit that it is a strange problem - the fact we are hitting any limit we have imposed on us seems ridiculous given the relative unpopularity of the site at the moment compared to in the past. It's quite possible it's down to just a few people misusing their pits for hosting large files that are being downloaded lots. I guess only Lep can know for sure if it's simply too low a bandwidth limit for the site, or if it is some people, knowingly or not, are using up far too much.

Every screenshot and sound and map I host is on MY site. So i dont think it's causing problems that way.

I talked with Gwilym about changing hosts because it's been slow in the US sometimes. He said changing the SQL stuff over would be a pain.

All I do is post, so I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with moi.

But yeah, I have a miniature panic attack when I can't get on the pit

Yer Nickel, it would be hassle.. I can't imagine why the site would be
going over the limits though, it's pretty much impossible (going by my
knowledge of bandwidth allocation).

Either way Lep is harder to get hold of than a formula for base metals
into gold so don't expect it to change any time soon. Let's just hope
it doesn't happen again!

Hmm, a confession?

It has been my understanding, and I am easily confused so it could be wrong, that links to files posted elsewhere still use the bandwidth of the path taken.

So, if you post a link here at Snarkpit, to a file on your site, the path is through the Snarkpit and uses its bandwidth too.

Correct? or not?

Seriously though, Snarkpits only weak link is things we cannot SEE! We can see everything except whats hotlinked.
If a server someplace has their map rotation linked to us, we would take the hit.

When you post an image, the image is downloaded from where its hosted, not through Snarkpit (except when the automatic downsizing is used).

This has not happened before, and if it does not happen again any time soon its probably ok. Its not like we have a sudden influx of new members, a bunch of images being hosted or such. I think the cause is most likely pit abuse.

</DIV></DIV>

This event has occured... maybe a half dozen times in the last couple months?
At any rate, its been more than one event, else I'd not have panicked.

Lets assume I'm wrong but, there have been NO new pits assigned in over a year, and no old timer would jeopardize the site. Also, no file over 2 megs was allowed to be uploaded, so how can you abuse 2 megs?

I talked to Lep yesterday. The first time in many moons. He was /is very busy.

Our topic was on an unrelated subject, but the impression I got was, he is way to busy to worry overmuch about milder events here.

A few hours downtime, might be considered mild.

shrugs

He is very busy none the less.

Here's a way to get the bandwidth down. We go back to all of our "random images" and "photography" threads that have not been used in a long time and we edit our posts to not have the pics in them anymore

or delete the threads altogether.

But if no one is reading the threads I don't see how they effect the bandwidth use.

I know that I am anal about images but, my compulsion is hardly effecting anyone but 56k users. I am finding it difficult to believe that a few thousand people looking at screens is the issue.

HL2 maps are much larger than HL1 maps. No one wants to get them via a server so they are hotlinking to websites that have them stored. I bet a 1,000 servers are linked to us in some form or another.

That has got to be it.

yes, it has happened a few times in the semi recent past.....hang on frenchy, itll be ok...

just a thought, and nothing derogatory intended here, but if Lep isnt tending to the site, then who is? and if nobody "is".... then i would think the problem might partially be a conglomeration of accumulated s**t stacked in server space, much like having to clean and maintain my wifes offices servers....i think nickel kinda scratched that surface, after reading back a bit...

Maybe we can all help by cleaning up our pits and removing unnecessary
old junk from them. That should make some small difference.
