I have had my computer for 18 months or so. It's running perfectly until recently, when I started to encounter this error message when I boot up.

This doesn't happen every time I boot, only occasionally (1 out of 5 times). When I see this message, I can just press F1 and continue the boot process. Everything works fine (including the keyboard) after I bypassed it by hitting F1.

I already googled for an answer, and most tech forum suggest that it's a CMOS error. Do I have to replace the CMOS battery?

Here is my spec:
Athlon 3200+ XP
ASUS nFORCE2 A7N8X-E Deluxe
1 GB Corsair in dual-channel
Antec TRUE430 ATX PSU
SEAGATE 7200 ST3200822AS HDD

Thanks in advance.

Did you try a different keyboard? (I wouldn't go buying a new yet, just try an old one or your neighbor's)

Not yet. After I confirmed that my BIOS is set to support USB keyboard and also vacuumed the keyboard one more time, the problem is not returning so far (after two boots).

I'll let you know whether vacuuming solved the issue. Thanks.

my bro has the same error for quite some time, and i started having it since yesterday, when i disabled and reistalled USB ports and other stuff (trying to solve my "irql_not less_or equal" BSOD). you have an external usb hd or something? maybe try unplugging it during startup. i have no clue either tbh.

I don't have an external USB HDD. I have a Logitech G5 mouse, but I had the mouse for a long time already, and I didn't have this error message before.

The bug isn't serious, but it's annoying though.

Personally I'd avoid USB keyboards. Seems like a very high-level interface for such a low-level peripheral.

I know there are USB to PS/2 adapters, would they work for your keyboard? This may fix it.

In CMOS theres an option called Stop on Set it to none and the problem will be ignored

Thanks everyone. I thoroughly vacuumed my keyboard and now the error never shows up again.

If you have the same error, it means that it's time to clean your keyboard.
