Im getting this error every time i try to create a server in CS:S. Jumps to desktop and gives me "Unable to load authentication library". I tried to google for the problem, but there really werent much about it and most of them got some shady cracks where i dont really want to have a go. Also searched some other forums but no luck  . Frustrated with the problem i thought i go map something, but for example half of the textures in hammer with search name aztec didnt work out (i never actually searched for it, just wanted to make a little aztec themed map so i dont really know if its always been like that). So i thought my game started having some bigger problems. Tried validating and defragment cache files without any luck. Weird thing is that i can still join to servers normally, doesnt give any error. This started happening just today.

Anyone else got the same and know how to deal with this?

Does it happen with any other games? Or media from other games?
Try validating/verifying the CS: S cache.

Steampowered doesn't seem to have anything readily findable related to this.

Other people who got this error had the wrong steam app id on their launch parameters. So, I imagine, it's if the game can't find the proper data it's looking for. Which could mean it's looking in the wrong place, or that it's corrupted or something like that.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Crap. I'm having this too now in Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. Didn't had it yesterday, but now whenever I try to start my map it goes back to Windows with that error. Not sure if it depends on the map, but it's pretty annoying.

Let's see if I can find something...

EDIT: Bummer. It seems to affect various Source games and mods, and although some people using Garry mod have found a workaround (changing the steamapp id in their shortcut), there's nothing about the other games. Seems to have to do with the latest Steam update for the Friends system.

Chill !

It only happens when creating servers, joining servers still works. It is not recommended to change your appid, by the way. You're making the mod run on the Source SDK codebase instead of the regular HL2/HL2DM libraries, which could cause problems sooner or later.

Sit back and let Valve fix it.

Well, it surely blocks me from testing my own maps... so let's hope they fix it soon.

Steam should have an update roll-back option. Seriously. I think my displacements still show up inverted and wireframe view in the model viewer is still broken. Wouldn't be a problem if I could pick which version to use, but alas. Well, it teaches me one thing: don't integrate your tools in a rigid structure!

I had similar problems in DM for awhile, I just deleted HL2dm and redownloaded it.
I think I also fixed it before by deleting my "registry.blob" file. I've had so many wierd problems with steam the last six months, with every update it just gets even stranger.

Source SDK gets finnicky about being online and being in offline mode. Most of the time, it will not load a map after compiling it, it gives me the "steam ID rejected" error and I have to manually find my map in the map list to create the server to test it.

At one point I just re-installed steam and all my steam games to fix "issues".
You MUST remember your user name and password though, and be sure you
backup all of your maps before attempting such an endeavor.

Also check your firewall, mine was blocking steam until I fixed it.
If your copy of Half-Life 2 is not fully decrypted it could also cause problems,
I learned this the hard way.

Steam should have an update roll-back option.
They can't do that because of VAC-measures. Everyone's client application should be the same. They should create a safe, non-VAC'ed local test environment, that's for sure.

Yeah, I understand the version issues with it, but it shouldn't be too hard to create a hash for each version and compare these hashes against the server you're connecting to. Although such fragmentation is probably something Valve wanted to avoid with Steam. Oh well...

I found a fix on the steampowered.com forums:

It worked for me, hopefully it works for you as well, Arzie.
