Hello,
I thought I'd make this thread as oppose to the doors competiton thread being filled with ideas for a new competition and what not.
I hope the moderators don't mind me doing this, I'm just curious as to see what the others can come up with for the new competition.

Here's some ideas that I came up with myself:
  • Bridges, just build a bridge, the most beautifull one wins.
  • Light a scene, see who can light up a pre-made room / set of rooms the nicest.
  • Elevators, see who can come up with some kind of complex and pretty looking elevator.
I think it would be nice to focus on single things, like lighting ,or a single object, since alot of people have trouble completing a full map of any type, it might be more of a learning experience to let people make single objects, or small chunks of maps, like the Doors competiton, to get some new ideas out into the open.

This will also allow the competitions to be relativly short and will make it possible for more competitions to be held sooner.
We can always do a full map competition further down the road.

Cheers for submitting your ideas,

~Junkyard God

To be quite frank, I'd much rather seen an actual "build a whole map based on XYZ rules". Small simple competition such as build a bridge, door, etc, are a bit unappealing in my opinion :/
Breaking the laws of mapping since 2003 and doing a damn fine job at it

Yes, but you must take into account that most people don't finish alot of maps.
We could have one with a pre-set theme and dimentions, but I think there would be many people joining in, and maybe 2 or 3 only finishing it.

But I thought, if we'd just all fill in ideas here, not discuss what we thing best, but just posting ideas, gwil and the other moderators, can decide what they think is most wanted by the community.

Well, we have about a million ideas for competitions already. As long as it's not completely unworkable I'm fine.

Also I think that "finishing" a map is something that could/should be encouraged in competitions. So, making a more general theme-based competition (rather than something specific inside the map) would be a good idea IMO. Something in the "map one room" spirit of the 2006 competition but with a more specific theme to speed up idea-searching.
Why snark works.

Building an entire working map is a bit beyond the scope of a one-month competition, IMO. That's not to say I wouldn't like to see another comp lasting several (three?) months being conducted at the same time hint hint.

Old mini-comp idea topic (don't bump)

I personally would love to see a shell of a small area built, with no ents and no textures, and have entrants texture, detail (props, func_detail, decals, env effects, etc), and light it (including cubemaps). The focus would be on making the area look interesting and giving it a good level of polish.

or even have a pre-built untextured room and the comp is to texture and light it well

This was suggested once or twice already. I would love to see this happen.

Well, I liked Dark Killer's idea of the destroyed [building?] idea. For once, I'd like to see a real convincing broken down building due to bombing or some kind of explosion or fire (I don't think Valve pulled it off that well in Half-Life 2).

Even cooler, what if we were to animate a building blowing up kinda like from the EP 2 game play videos? That was pretty sweet. (I know those were done with models and the new "physics scene" system), but if it's just a map that contains a small blown up building, a person could pull off a few expensive tricks with brushwork to make it look quite impressive. Custom models I think would be a plus as well.

I don't know how superficial this sounds, but I'd like to see a competition which goes well for screenshots. It's fun to build stuff that can be presented well in screenshots. I'd still love to see an interactive physics-oriented comp, but we could have something more aesthetical this time. The "light and texture this place" competition sounds good.

"Custom models I think would be a plus as well." ... I don't think most people can make custom models though.

I have xsi on my comp but i don't have photo shop so i can't texture anything.

I like the exploding shed idea. I'd bet there be a lot of entries for that.

this idea has been around for years, but no-one seems eager to make the base layout for this.

I WOULD LOVE DESTROYED BUILDINGS OR WALLS COMPETITIONS !!!!

Please take this into account, its not as easy as it sounds, its pretty hard to create a destroyed wall\building\structure that looks too realistic... But it will surely look amazing if someone can pull that off...

Thank you Riven for your post btw  <br style="color: white;">

I could make a base layout ,but I'm not terribly skilled at Source level design, but something simple could be done.
