Okay guys, I've been trying to fix this issue for about 2 days now and I'm getting nowhere.
I've got a map for TF2 that has a crapton of custom models and textures in it. Now, I compile the map-- works just fine. I start a server with its giant .res file. Someone joins the server that has never played the map before. After they download it and a large amount of custom vtf and vmt, it says the map file differs from the server. I've seen other people complain about this issue, but usually they have a different map version causing the problem.
So, I thought maybe the .res file is fouled up; I tried giving him both the models and materials folders directly and he still got the "bsp differs from server" error. However, he CAN create his own server with the map and it runs perfectly, and of course, if I try to join it says "map differs from server".
Can something else cause this? Some strange map error that allows people to start servers with the map yet bars anyone from joining? I've also tried embedding the model and material data in the bsp. No luck. I've tried another tf2 map with less custom content, and it actually works.
Isn't it true that even without any of the custom textures and model files, someone could still be able to join a server as long as their bsp matches? Granted everything would be pink, but they'd still be able to join... right?? Where am I going wrong here? What's the proper way to host a server with a map that has a heavy amount of custom content?
YEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH thanks in advance.
