Map Description

This is a complete recreation of the RMS Titanic.

This project will be broken into several phases:

Phase 1 (December 23 2011 to March 24 2012)
- Basic structure based on blueprints by Bruce Beveridge
- Texturing for clarity
- Basic modelling of staircases
- Basic level optimization

Phase 2a (March 24 2012 to April 24 2012)
- Level splitting per deck with transitions
- Phase 2a abandoned in favour of optimization to the architecture

Phase 2b (April 24 2012 to present)
- Level optimization
- Architecture optimization
- Completion of re-texturing
- Details to Boat Deck including modelling external fittings

Phase 3 (unknown to unknown)
- Addition of rooms (cabins, lavs, storage, etc)
- Basic proper texturing
- Review of ship's structure
- Advanced level optimization (full VVIS compile?)

Phase 4 (unknown to unknown)
- Basic roofing/ceiling detail
- Doorways and doors
- Windows
- Funnel structure

Phase 5 (unknown to unknown)
- Modelling of rails
- Modelling of posts and supports
- Modelling of bridge and wheelhouse telegraphs and wheels
- Modelling of funnel accessories
- Modelling of lifeboats

Phase 6 (unknown to unknown)
- Basic lighting
- Skymap

The following details have been deliberately modified from the blue prints due to game limitations:

- Crew spiral staircases at the bow from D Deck to the Tank top due to player collision hull. The staircase has been made bigger.

Slower progress today. When I initially started the basic dimensions of the ship in VHE I created a virtual X, Y, Z marker of sorts, but it wasn't accurate, and each vertical was 16 units (you can see it protruding out of the ship in earlier pics). I re=measured and redid the dimensions using 1 unit bars. This has had the effect that most of the central components of the ship need to be adjusted slightly.

Thankfully most that is required is a 1 unit extension. This affects the staircases (Fore Grand, Aft Grand, Second Class), First Class Elevators, Boiler Casings, Engine Casings, and all the central rooms on the forward boat deck (ahead of the Fore Grand Staircase).

Some of that has been fixed, some is still left to do.

Aside from that though, I've completed most of the basic structure of A deck aft of the Fore Grand Staircase and corrected several issues as well. The layout for all the bay windows in the First Class Reading and Writing Room, Smoke Room, and Lounge have all been added as well (you'll notice them on the raised room sections of the boat deck)

I've re-posted the pictures in my posts above using external links, the Snarkpit only permits 10 images per map (which is fine) but it also compresses the JPG further and I didnt like that.

Below, are shots of the mostly completed Boat Deck structure, including the addition of flooring and roofing now, as well as doorways (which you cant see though)

Looking aft:

Looking forward:

I'll be starting to look for textures soon. Anyone know if there are any sets out there for either an Olympic class of ship (such as Titanic) or any other luxury ship of the era?

Most of the basic structure of the Boat Deck (in green) and about half of the A Deck (in blue) is complete.

Here's a look at the view now:

Based on what I've been able to find from here (https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Dimensions) it seems the player eye level is a mere 4 feet above ground. Is it possible these days to modify this? Most of the decks on Titanic are around the 9 feet tall mark and that makes the layout unusually tall.

Who is only 4 feet at eye level anyways! Gordon is must be rather short!

The main structure of the forward section of the Boat Deck is complete: It houses the officer's quarters, bridge and wheelhouse, Marconi, and a few other crew rooms.

Thanks for the offer omegaslayer. I might do that. My plan was to build the ship as best as possible in one map file, and when it was mostly complete, at least structurally, to break it down into several smaller sections for compiling and playing. Though that might not always be fun.

Also too, as an easy modeling software to learn and use, Google Sketchup is great for adding details from simple shapes. Like moldings or raised wood paneling. Valve developed an easy script file for exporting .vmf and .smd file types. (you can get it through the portal 2 Authoring Tools or L4D 2 Authoring Tools. Or google for it. (It's just some script files, you don't need the actual authoring tools).

Either way you have a lot of spaces to model so good luck.

Theres a hard limit on the number of brushes you can have in a level (func_detail included). Titanic is pretty big. If you need a map compiler with the brush limitation raised, let me know. I can send it to you :)

Also:

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Propper

Turns regular brush work into model geometry from hammer. Never used it, but it looks pretty cool/

I've been out of the mapping game since forever, and I've never really done anything with models in the past. I dont know to what extent models come in to play now-a-days.. So for now, everything is brushwork, but certain items, I'll probably brush up quick in anticipation of model work in the future.
