Hey, as the subject of this thread suggests, got a graphics tablet and so far i think its great. Its a real nice one too - Intuos 2. Its really kind of a risk since although I've never really done any serious painting on real canvas, Ive always wanted to get into 2d art. I'm still getting used to the tablet, but I can already feel how powerful a tool it is.

Anyways, I know a lot of you guys here are uber graphics artist gurus, and so I thought I'd post some of my first attempts at "painting" with it for you guys to crit/give me advice.

1: The first thing I did was to trace the picture of a car to get the feel of the tablet. It's just a trace, but I thought I would post it anyways since later I use the outline as a guide for a certain car in another painting.

2: Then I had this idea to make a wood texture, but got carried away and it ended up being a gnarly knot like wood "texture" (it doesnt tile).

3: Next, I decided, what the heck, I'll just sketch exactly what I see. the following is what I came up with (the view of my computer from my desk here at college).

4: Some mountains.

5: I'm big on unicycling, so I drew a sketch of someone unicycling backwards. The proportions are off, and the position of the guy looks painful, but ... meh, I'll improve eventually.

6: Finally, I got the balls to do a whole "painting". Basically Its a guy standing by his car out in the middle of the desert. The earlier trace is used for the outline of the car. (56k warning, big image)

Crits, suggestions, and tips are highly welcome. I know I have a long way to go to become a good 2d artist, but any help you guys give will make me a little bit better. Thanks.

Ooh nice stuff! I got a graphics tablet too, it's cheap and old but it does the job pretty well. The first real big thing I did with it is up on my site now

It's a bit wobbly at first isn't it? Took me a while to get used to anyway

The one I used was about ?70 (about $45-50). But yeah I get those wobbly lines too. I suppose the best thing to do is just zoom in and use wrist circles.

Hey guys - your local wacom freak here. I'm without an internet connection right now, so I can only pop in periodically.

It's good to see people using these things. I bought mine over 3 years ago, and didn't really start getting busy with it until this year. It takes a while to get used to. The wobbly lines are hard to get past, if you draw slow, but you can learn to make pretty steady lines if you more sharp, gestural motions. Personally, I have never been much good at line-art (a sketcher at heart), so I went right into a painting approach with the Wacom. I focus more on shapes, and tone, than line...which lets you kind of hurdle the wacoms shakiness. I have recently started to piece together a website, with alot of my digital sketches, if anyone would like to take a look. www.duncanmoore.org. It's far from finished, so forgive the shoddiness.

Anyway, congradulations on taking the plunge and purchasing the Intuos2. If you keep working on it, you will just love that thing more and more. It's the best pc investment I have ever made.

Once again... if you want to mingle with the real masters of digital painting, check out the forums at: www.conceptart.org, and http://forums.sijun.com/

nick, commenting at this stage is akin to a beta version of a map with one room, un-compiled hammer shots.

the shots show promise, and as i said, i prefer the B/W ones of the images posted, but there isn't alot there to comment on.

i can say, you did very well your first time out the gate, i am very impressed
