I took an intro. drawing class last semester. Here are some of the things I drew in it:

Hub, cranks, and fork of a unicycle.


Blind contour of a face.


This was drawn with really wet ink.


Done it pen. Its a backpack.


Positive/negative shape.


Trying to show the folds of a shirt with line.


The bottom/side of my shoe.

Nick, it was decided ages ago that images in the "Arts" thread need no apology for file sizes. You might note that I never complain here. :smile:

I may piss and cry about my poor connection speed, but I do not deny others rights to display their arts favorably.

Really nice stuff, I'd say you could make a very strong art portfolio with this stuff (if your at all intrested in art school).

While anyone can draw something they observe (with enough practice) few people have a good grasp on conceptual stuff like this. Now I'm sure your teacher "made" you do some of this stuff, but still, you did it well. I really like your shoe and shrub.

Funny thing about art is that many times you'll find that "experts" enjoy conture line drawings or negative space drawings rather than highly finished works. I know that my drawing teacher hated all of my finished works while she loved my simple half-finished conseptual stuff.

I guess I'm the same way. teh art that impresses me the most is the kind that leaves a strong impression without exactly hitting realism. To me, good art should feel like a strong dream....but that's just me.

Too busy studying physics and math. Maybe if I had another lifetime to live and a boatload of money I would try art school, but for now my drawing is for fun.

Thanks. On the shoe and the shrubbery (and the backpack) the instructor said: "try to capture the essence of the object that you draw". Being a math/science type person, at first I was like: "uhm, wtf?". But as I was drawing it became more clear what he meant.

Yeah, I figure that somewhere in everyone's mind is a part that senses "beauty". And I don't mean beauty in the sense of a hot chick, I mean actual beauty and elegance that goes beyond our base instincts. It can be in anything - art, music, mathematics, programming code, maps, movies, the natural world, etc...

Anyways my point is that sometimes reality has that "beauty" factor, but if you only consider things that are real and perfectly rendered, thats throwing out a huge category of other more abstract stuff that might be just as beautiful.

Perhaps the "experts" see doing more abstract stuff as directly tackling the "create something beautiful" problem, instead of tackling the problem indirectly through drawing reality.

Have you had any previous experience. Those are actually pretty nice. I like the unicycle and metal bowl. How often havedo you draw?

My previous experience is mostly with texture making, not so much drawing. In the class I probably made like 50 drawings, and I only posted my favorite 10, so keep in mind most of my drawings are not as good as the ones you see.

As for how often, I'd say in the class 3 drawings per week on average (2 classes per week + 1 assignment). Haven't really drawn much over the break though.

The last one is my absolute favorite , the reflections are great :biggrin: i can almost feel like i'm in the room.
