Hey all,

I have a friend through chat I met on the PlanetDoom forums named Lyubomir Ivanov or Demon! Any he keeps telling me how much he thinks his home town and surrounding area look like C17. He finally sent me a picture from out of his window and I fully agree. It's got the same low hills, high rise apartments, and lots and lots of TV antenneas.

Take a look:

Valve based most of hl2 and the city you're in on European cities. I think there's been a thread here before about this too (way back in 2004, maybe)
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Indeedy, they generally compare the style of C17 to that of Eastern Europe - Ukraine, Lithuania, Bulgaria, etc... Check out the wiki article on City 17 for more info actually;

Large parts of C17 and the surroundings seem to be inspired by the city of Odessa, Ukraine. The name of one characters in HL2 could be a tribute to the city.

Also to some point all European cities look like C17. The only difference is the number of plattenbaus.
Why snark works.

I remember reading somewhere that City17 is based in Russia. I would have to think so, considering the communism-style theme, similar architecture, giant horses on pedastiles, our favorite "Father Gregori" and his russian accent, and other things relating to that country.

"Communism-style theme"? What does that mean?

"Similar architecture"... well, I saw a few buildings in HL2 that looked sorta kinda like these ones by my house... C17 is based in Seattle, WA! Because you can totally pinpoint where a city is by the style of the buildings which are always undeniably unique to any specific country/state/city/town/neighborhood.

According to Raising the Bar, it's based on Bulgaria Romania Ukraine and Russia. So C17 isn't a certain city per-say. Case closed. :|

Though I prefered Black Mesa, Valve really managed to get an interesting and yet untouched architectural theme for their maps. I only was disappointed by the lack of exotic impressions. For most westerners (especially Europeans) this looks like out of your living room window.

Andrei, is that book worth spending the money on? It looks interesting, but I can't tell if I want to spend money on it.
