I have been giving serious thought to hooking up my router again. The newer DSL modems have the capability of hooking up to 4 pc's to the net now. A feature that seems to do the job of a router. The problem is, I no longer seem to have the firewall protection that I had last time I used DSL.

My question is two fold:

1) Is there any really good software firewalls now that are freeware?
2) Would it be better to just set my router back up?

I am having to run a spyware program daily. I can only assume that there is no hardware firewalls in the new modems.

ZoneAlarm is a free firewall that does a pretty good job but IMO a router firewall is the best protection one can have and, unlike some firewalls, it doesn't drive you up the wall with absurd security requests.

If you could specify the Make/Model of the modem that would be great

The modem I have is a Modem and Router in one unit so yours may be the same (mine is a Linksys (WAG54Gv2 I think) which does have an inbuilt h/w firewall).

Good software firewalls:

Zone Alarm seems to do the job well enough for me www.zonelabs.com

There is also Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall which I have heard good reports on, but personally couldnt get working/work out how to use it http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

I am sure there are others but these are the ones that I have had experience with.

Hope that helps

It is an AT&T modem. You can visit www.2wire.com for some details, but the exact model seems to be missing, or the picture shown isn't the exact match. My modem is thin and white and has an at&t logo on the casing with a 2WIRE logo on the side.

If it has some hardware firewall, its turned off.

Zone Alarm or Sygate, I would also keep the windows firewall on. The best would be the hardware firewall in your router.

I run multiple spyware programs, even the best ones won't find all of them. Spybot Search & destroy, ad-aware, etc... The best prevention for spyware IMO is Mozilla Firefox, I hardly get any spyware since I switched. IE is bult in to Windows, so spyware makers use the many holes Windows leaves open.

F*R*E*N*C*H*Y!!!

You think I know this not?
I am sitting here doing nothing and the infected warning pops up.. Unless, you are saying we need to post in the site suggestions thread that Lep not infect my God damned PC?

I will search harder in my modem. There has got to be a hardware firewall setting in it.

shrugs

Software firewalls are so annoying that I'd like them as a last resort if possible.

I have a rather strong firewall/anti-virus, (not free, nateraly) and the only times it has warned me of a virus intusion was when I started downloading illegal music or
pr0n.

The whole package works quite well for me. Far less false rejection errors than Norton.

I don't think there's any Anti-Spyware/Virus packege out there that isn't secure enough for average internet use (including taboo), so I rate them for ease of use.

Yes the firewall by itself is free, if you want all the exras (anti virus/spyware etc) it costs money.

Does anyone here need to be told that downloading something makes it free? Didn't think so.

No, but there is a clearly defined difference between saying "*taboo*" and "Thanks Genius"

I think that you know that so, its redundant of me to point something so obvious out to you.

Maybe you're missing my point. He said

'It doesn't cost any money if you taboo'

And you say this;

No, but there is a clearly defined difference between saying "taboo" and "Thanks Genius"

So you're saying in place of 'Thanks Genius' I should have said taboo? That's a messed up conversation.

He pointed out something rediculously obvious, I told him so. Get over yourself please.
