Now that my comp is running I have to reinstall VHE and everything of the sorts. Being as intelegent as I am I only backed up my maps folder, but the entire VHE. Nor do I have .exe files and the likes.

But browsing the downloads I have to come a fix.

VHE 3.4 or 3.5
ZHLT or ZHLT (p series  ) or MHLT (merl something  )

which is your recommended?

I'm using the p-series of ZHLT, and they work fine ... and I think 3.5 is still in a b?ta stage, so opt for 3.4.

3.4 = Completed
3.5 = Sort of new beta version which shows any models in the mod/models directory in the editor (although you will need a 3.5 compatible fgd for this to happen). Can also load pointfiles in-editor (although it's a bit crap tbh), and has three rotatable cricle thingies for yaw, pitch and roll (although only the top one actually works... ).

ZHLT are the regular Zoner's tools.

ZHLT "P" series are the customized version by XP-Cagey with the plane optimization and clip-node optimization or whatever.

MHLT are Merl's special customizations to ZHLT. These were originally meant as special "experimental" tools for advanced mappers (which is why the ZHLT documentation is not included with them), but they're quickly becoming the mainsteam.

It depends. I would recommend MHLT though, for switchable texlights (yay!) among other things.

Some people really like that ZHLT-P though. In my experience it's pretty unstable though and creates all sorts of weird bugs in BSP's. Probably just me. Use it if it actually compiles things correctly for you. You usually want this if you're making a huge NS map (clipnode improvements for skulks) or if you're running low on planes.

ZHLT is still good though, but I feel MHLT is stable enough to act as a sort of "spiritual" successor to ZHLT.

I thought that the "P-series" of ZHLT was actually based on MHLT. Have they diverged again?

It says it's based off of ZHLT. shrug

I think xpcageys tools is the same as MHLT except the plane and clipnode optimiser.

I'd say like, download them all, create a config for each one of them, and see which compiles best for you ...

Xp-cagey's "p-tools" are based off merl's "mhlt" which is based off ZHLT.

Heres how it goes:

Zhlt is uber-incredibly stable. Mhlt is also very stable, but not quite as stable as Zhlt. The "p-tools" are pretty stable, but not nearly as much as mhlt or zhlt.

However, the p-tools have more features and speed/accuracy optimizations than mhlt which in turn has more features and optimizations than zhlt. The specifics are documented with the tools i will not bore you with them here.

Forceflow has basically the right idea. For any given map, try it on cageys tools, then if you get some bizzaro error you shouldnt be getting try it on mhlt, and then if even that doesnt work, try it on zhlt.
