I've never had an HDR graphics card (and at the moment I've only got a crappy OEM-only geforce-compatible HP lump) so I was wondering whether or not to run a full hdr compile before releasing a map (hypothetically). I won't be able to test whether it works or not and so I might release something buggy or stupid looking. Is it the done thing to release a map without hdr? Is a default compile enough?

HDR is more of a gimmick right now. I don't think HDR is necessary to make a good map. In your situation, I wouldn't recommend it unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Also change the texture of the dock. Docks are rarely tile. -Facepunch

You have to be able to run in HDR mode to build the cubemaps in HDR, so without a DX9-compatible card you wouldn't be able to technically finish an HDR compiled map.

A way around that would be to give the BSP to a friend who can run HDR and ask them to run buildcubemaps for you. Like Stadric said though, it's not really all that important, and definitely not needed to make a map good.
