sorry if this is the wrong place i tried to post in the map forum but says i must relate to a map or something.

If it's an issue with your friend not having the map, try giving him a download link for the map (like rapidshare.com), then it should work.
People its snarkpit.net not snarkpit.com! Be sure to check this when you add links!

Check your autoexec.cfg file in the "\cfg" folder of your mod/game. (for example: "steamfolders[...]\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\cfg\autoexec.cfg").

If none exists, create the file with a text editor. Write

sv_lan "0"

into the file and games should show up in the public server lists now. All you have to do is load the map in game and wait for your buddy to join. He can search the servers by mapname.

some mods need a specific entity in a map before the map shows up in your list. tfc needs a tf_detect, dod:s needs a dod_detect.

etc.

if you can't find an entity like this for whatever mod it is that you're running, then try starting a server with one of the default maps, and changing the map manually by typing map yourmapnamehere

I have no idea how much you know about this kind of things, so sorry if I'm treating you like a noob, but:

With a dedicated server you always need a third machine, as you cannot join from the machine that runs the dedicated server.

You don't need a dedicated server for a quick test 2 or 3 player test. It's overkill. Try putting

sv_lan "0"

in every cfg file you can get it into (config.cfg, game.cfg). Type sv_lan in console when ingame and see if it's set to 0 or 1 (I assume you want to play over the internets, so sv_lan - only Local Area Network - should be "0"). You're not trying to play over lan, do you? If yes, forget what I told you.

Also try to get the correct ip-adress and use the

connect 123.456.78...

console command to join.

More unlikely if you never have any problems playing over the nets, but there could be an issue with the firewall, too.

I know your problem, mate. :/
And I remember always getting it to work somehow. Usually through various tries of setting sv_lan to 0. Good luck!

Then make one entitled autoexec.cfg! And write sv_lan 0 in it. Maybe that's it.

Hmm... well, did you try to just start the server by typing "map mapname"? The build-in create server option seems to be badly configured sometimes. Open up HL2DM, type "map mapname" and see if a server automatically pops up in the server browser (you should see yourself). If it doesn't I'm out of ideas

Forgive me for treating you like an utter and total noob, but I want to get the simplest problem out of the way. Did you compile the map?

then it's most likely your firewall that's preventing anyone else from seeing it.

If you connect to the internet through a router (very likely) you'll need to either set up port forwarding, or use a VPN like Hamachi.
