This is what I get when I attempt to run vrad, any advice?

Completely reinstalling the game and source hasn't fixed it.

hmm all I can think of is perhaps you're using an invalid config in your paths setup? pointing to a different engine version of vrad ( ep1 vs ep2 )

Did you setup hammer or let steam do it for you?

I'm a retired mapper really... Want to pick up more now that i'm older, I thought steam did it automatically and correctly, should I change any settings?

Nope.. Steam does a good job... I have had no problems with it doing it for me.

I have noticed though that you need to enter the game your mapping for, play on a server, and then make sure you select the game from the SDK menu at the bottom of it. Also if you try to do something from HLDM, you need to have HL installed and run though at least once as well.

For some reason creating a server has not worked for me, to get it to find the files.. I have had to go online and enter a server from the list. I dont know why, but thats something that has worked for me. Give that a try.

I currently do have HL2SP + HL2DM fully installed, the information at the bottom of scource sdk is "Half-Life 2: Episode One" and "Half-Life 2: Deathmatch" so those are correct also.

I still get my problem where vrad has an error and closes, and yes i have also had problems hitting the test map button and when the game starts it says client timed out.

If anyone knows how to solve my problem please throw up more ideas, thank you all for your help up to now.

Yeah I get the Server times out thing as well.. I just create the server after it does that, and continue to look around at the map I am working on.

I am lost on the vrad thing.. I hope someone here can help you fix that.

Alright, so I've checked the internet for people with the same problem, and eveyr thread resolves with no resolution.

From the information acquired though I know for a fact that this is not a map related problem. There must be something whack with the pre-set setting.

Can't be a corrupt file because I've reformatted and problems remained.

This is driving me crazy. :(

Ok, here is what to do, make a new map, a simple box room than place a light entity, than compile, tell us real quick if it stops responding again.

Try compiling the map under CounterStrike Source.

I tried to compile a map for the mini-comp, and I also had the same error under HL2DM. But was able to compile under CSS.

I have not tried compiling under Hl2 yet.. I will today and see what happens.

Also look for an alternate vrad tool you can link and set up yourself. If that is the only problem, that should fix it.

Caution on those! CST is known to have some show-stopping bugs, mostly to do with props under ep1 I remember. I never did try his RAD by itself, though the lighting I got from these tools was different than Valve's

None of those helped, the new tool conflicts with the same error message at the same exact time [as does vrad.exe conflict]. I believe this is to be a display issue.

I'm running a...

AMD Athlon(tm) Processor
989 MHz, 640 MB of RAM

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

I've tried lowering display to avoid conflict but it results in the editor refusing to load at all.

Thank you all for your help to this point, now that the problem is more analyzed maybe someone will know what action to take.

Yes; nothing is changed aaron. The box + light still have the deadly vrad.exe error

Its safe to completely assume that it is not my mapping that has caused the problem. Nor any mapping for that matter.

I think that maybe your tools may be corrupt. When I used to work with Half-life 1, the same thing happened to me, I downloaded a fresh install of vrad.exe, vvis.exe.... and I noticed that the file sizes where different (The current vrad.exe was 118Kb and the newly downloaded one was 78Kb or something, even though they where the same version).

Once I replaced them, they worked, so maybe you could try and download a fresh copy of these tools, if you like, I can email them to you.

I don't think they're corrupt but i can try, the emails MasterCyax@Hotmail.com

I've reinstalled + tried different tools for source and still get problem. Not sure if it'll fix.

your sys specs seem awfully low :(

Maybe managing your memory will help, try batch compiling from shortcut?

Hmm, just a thought, I noticed that you have Norton's installed, try turning that off, you may have to go start > run > "msconfig" and temporarily uncheck it from the Services and Startup tabs, it won't ruin your computer don't worry.

I have nortan 360 on my machine and its a real ass hole, unless if I temper with its settings, it won't allow me to have the Steam Community active while in games, it will often crash games spitting out a nice error message and caused me a whole lot of other problems related to steam (I can't even keep firefox history and cache!!, which is really annoying). As a result, I have totally removed it from normal startup and only re-enable it if I want to scan my machine.

Also, check your emails ;).

I had the same problem a while ago, and IIRC it was something to do with the zonealarm (firewall) settings for vrad. After I upped the permissions for it, everything worked fine again.

Ok well I tried all your suggestions, except fishy, i don't fully understand what you're saying.

I started off my downloading aaron's tools from my e-mail (thanks) and set them up insted of my current tools. Ran hammer and attempted a compile, no luck. Same error message.

So I downloaded batch compiler, followed your instructions, set it up, during compile process when it hit vrad, same error message poped up.

And I tried disabling norton, no luck either.

Please elaborate more on your description if possible fishy, it might be the solution :O

He means check your Norton firewall settings to see if it is blocking vrad.exe or if it has any restrictions over it. If so remove the restrictions.

Best check Windows Firewall to and any other firewalls you may have on your system. I'm now pretty convinced this is a firewall conflict or something like that now.

I've gone into the firewall settings and manually made all the source tools full allowance, and the vrad.exe on the rad phase of compiling still throws the same message.

Wow that probaly will work... going to do that right now.
No luck, can't run a batch compiler let alone hammer in safe mode, the batch compiler needs steam running apparently and it won't boot in safe mode.

So I thought i'd crank my display settings down and try running a batch, no luck either... this is frustrating as hell

Damn!

Try start > run > "msconfig" > General Tab > and check the "diogostic startup" box and restart than try and compile than.

a shot in the dark...

do you have 2 sticks of RAM? Could be it's accessing a bad section of memory every time. Try switching the two around...
