I just wanted to ask you guys how I take a picture like the one Cassius has supplied (cliff texture) and turn it into a .wad so I can use it in Hammer. Just need to know.

Wally. It's pretty easy to use, just make a new WAD, and then paste images into it as new textures (bearing in mind they have to be 256 colours, and Wally isn't terribly good at converting them...)

wally can be fickle, i have found its a bitch at times for no apparent reason, but it will eventually produce something, most times even something useful

to make a wad you will need to look for wildcards (not the mapper variety but image ones) so you will need in your case a "*.jpg" without the quotes.

i cannot remember all the steps involved, but i do know thats a vital one.

wally otherwise is self explanatory.

hope that helps.

.jpg is a horrible format to import into a 256 color format, especially with Wally. Use some other program (Photoshop, PSP) to convert it to either 8-bit PNG or 8-bit BMP, then import into a WAD, and you'll get much more accurate/better results.

I concur, I'm partial to the .bmp but I imagine that .png files work too. A .jpg will most likely create a blurry texture because of the optimization.

Don't forget you need to re-mip your images once they are in wally. And make sure all their dimensions are divisable by eight, or you will be screwed, so to speak, (ie 64x64, 160x96)

i thought it was divisable by 16? which is why black and sky texture are 16x16?
