Hi peeps :dorky:

Im currently making a small Cs map, and I just learnt how to create own textures and wads with Wally. But I know skies aren't made the same way as textures, and id like to decorate it with an uniqe sky of my own. So if anyone could explain how to do it and maybe give me a few hints on the way id be most grateful.

Oh wait! I have another problem:

http://www.angelfire.com/creep/evilone/CsScreen.jpg

I need some nice effect on the lightpoles. I tried to make a small glow sprite but it cut though the lamp and looked wierd, I also tried volumetric lightning but I couldnt get it to look realistic and fit with the light it emitts. Any solution on this point also wecome!

Doh! I have another question! (will they ever end??)

I used a custom wad in that map of mine, but when I removed the wad from the wadlist and removed all textures from the map that was in that wad, removed the wad from the cs folder, recompiled and tried to run the map it said that the wad couldnt be found! Why does Cs still need that wad?

Theres a big LAN-party at Friday, and Id like that map to be all done by then, even if im not that much into Cs.

Many thanks in advance

if you compile the map with the wadfile loaded into WC, even if you don't use any textures, the map will require it's presence whereever you had the wadfile. It will not load if you don't have the wad where the map wants it. Just recompile the map without the wad and it'll work out.

you can do an onlyent compile, and if you removed the wads from hammer and saved, it will remove the unwanted wads without the bother of a full compile.

you don't have to do a full recompile to get it, especially if its an hours long compile.

Did you restart VHE after deleting the WAD? The WAD will continue to be in use until you restart Hammer.

With regaurd to the lighting effect: I have found that if you use several small scale glow sprites rather than one big one, you can get a very nice effect without that horrible "the sprite is cut in half" look.

I were just going to ask you to define 'accordingly', but then I realised that I could check it out for myself

So far so good, when I start making that sky texture more questions will probably pop up

OK there are (I think) two programs used for making skymaps, 3DSmax and terragen, the former being expensive but better, and the latter being free but not quite as good. I have only used terragen so I will concentrate on that. The website is http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ and there are tutorials and example work linked from there. Basically you create a terrain by adjusting a bunch of settings, then set the sea level, sun angle/elevation, and generate the clouds. Once this is done, there are loads of settings that adjust how the light diffuses through the atmosphere, the cloud colour, sunlight colour, shadow colour, everything. There is a preview window which helps you get the look you want.

When you have got what you want, you move the camera to a point of your choosing, setting the field of view to 90 degrees, the camera angle and elevation to 0, and do a full quality 256*256 render of that. Then to get the other 3 sides, change the camera angle to 90, 180, and 270, then back to 0 again but with elevations 90 and -90, to produce the top and bottom of the skymap. After all 6 images have been produced and saved, you have to name them skynameup, skynamedn, skynamelf, skynamert, skynameft, and skynamebk.

I can't remember exactly how half-life orientates the top and bottom images, so these may need to be rotated. Not that it matters now because my plan of getting some snarkmarks by writing a half decent mini guide on skymap creation in teragen that might have been marked as a 'correct/accepted answer' has been spoiled by the fact that I don't have the option to set this as an answer to the question. I probably did something wrong. Nevermind.

In the future, if you have distinctly separate questions, put them into separate topics, not only will this assist the search feature of the information database, but it will also allow people who put in the effort to get credit for it (IE scary_jeff, he put alot into answering the sky issue)

also i would suggest, putting the issue in the topics heading as the search looks for key words.. so future peeps looking for sky problems will fine sky answers.
