Not sure where he got it, but my flatmate grabbed some videos of Softimage presentations at ECTS covering HL2 editing. One of them is all about normal mapping, which is using the lightmaps of a 3D model on a 2D texture, so that lighting reacts realistically to the texture even on a flat surface. Sounds like most textures in HL2 will be made by taking renders of 3D models going by this, so you texture artists might wanna start learning Gollum's approach to texturing.

How many videos are there doc? I only saw 2 of them - one on normal mapping, and the other on animation of Alyx.

Ah I meant the techy ones, rather than the gameplay one, which I assume is the one shown at E3 a while back?

[edit2] yeah this was discussed before. there are several mirrors at edgefiles, so I guess I won't bother.

Whats Gollumns approach to texturing?   I think what you are talking about it something similar to bump mapping correct, yet it only effects the way shadows are rendered.   I would assume that the single alpha channel that tags along with the texture would be for that purpose unless I am mistaken.   Sounds pretty interesting though, I'll have to try and get those videos you are talking about.
