So with the new site came a new rating feature for maps, but for just special maps. Star maps are the ones that stand out from the crowd. They can have a rating just like any other map, but to have the 'star map' label on them means they've gone above and beyond. These are supposed to be some of the best of the best. They can't be selected by regular users, so are only applicable via admin approval. So since we need to build up our database with the best maps, I need you guys to help us. :sherlock:

We have a ton of maps (too many for me to remember the better ones) and it would be nice for you guys to help bring forth some of the more memorable ones you think deserve the 'star' banner. We can discuss their worthiness too, if someone disagrees. (You may also use this thread to discuss the validity of the current ones up there too!)

They can be from any game; it's best that they have images. It's alright if their download link no longer works. We simply want to make aware to users these are maps worth trying out regardless of where they can find them on the web.

-How do you view Star maps? Easy, simply go to the maps page and under the 'find maps' bar, click the drop down list where it says 'newest first' and select 'star maps' from the bottom of the list, and then click 'find maps' and the ones that come up will be the ones we have in the database so far.

-Oh! And don't forget to rate them as such. We need to build up our rating system on maps already in the database, so if you remember playing the maps before, be sure to rate it as such! -this helps other users find good maps!

-So there you have it, an excuse to go searching through our extensive maps database (with faster speeds now!).

Have fun! :D

Good idea Riven, is this kinda like interloper's spotlight, but not time related?

I think you're gonna get a lot of suggestions on people's 'favorites'. So I'll post a couple quickly that give me the shivers ( hl2dm ):

icepick by Finger
http://www.snarkpit.net/index.php?s=maps&map=2321

balcony by Reaper47:
http://www.snarkpit.net/index.php?s=forums&f=2&t=10366&tp=0

( On a side note it wasn't that easy to find these maps using Search. for icepick I had to find a post by Finger and then go to his profile page and then find the map )

Very good idea. I was actually thinking of starting a thread where we did something like this but it could be any map from across the interweb.

I'll defiantly have a look through later and see what I can dig up.

As for your suggestions haymaker, I haven't played Finger's map but I don't think that reaper47's map should be there, I don't know, maybe I'm being to harsh. Sure, its a really great map, 5 start rating deserving absolutely, really great design and layout but everything else strikes me as on par as far as "good" maps go. The visuals don't strike me as "awe inspiring", the sound design while cool (love the windchimes), I could think of a few modifications which would have made it better imo and so on. I see the map as very well designed in all disciplines (aesthetics, layout, sound) and that's it.

Here is an example of what I think is worthy of the title, de_course and de_wanda, dod_kolsch.

So why do I think these maps are deserving? Not only are the visuals impressive for a Source game, but they have great design qualities that reaper47's map has and are original which I think is important. They pretty much show a good effort in everything involved with level design.

But anyway, that's my opinion, I really need to have a look at what's in the Snarkpit library to get an idea of what the quality bar should be. Just off the top of my head, that Snarkpit Half-Life 1 compilation map years back, I was very impressed by it and I think it is deserving of the title, I'll get a link later.

Yea, I've played all those maps and agree that those maps are quite awesome, (due in part to the immense amount of custom content) and if we had them here in our database, you bet they'd be star maps for sure! But alas, they are not, and we can't make the authors share them with us, so we get to work with the content we have. -And we have plenty of awesome maps.

dm_balcony is already on there haymaker. And I agree that it should be as well. I can see what you're saying about it though aaron, it does seem like a really well put together HL2DM map, but nothing more. I'd have to disagree there though. I feel it does have something more going for it. There is an appreciation I have for the way in which the different spaces connect to one another. When playing through that map, I feel as though "hey, this map must have been super well put together." The spaces just 'flow' into one another. I'm not sure how to explain it, but up until a few years ago, I would not of had this 'feeling' about it. -I suppose that's architecture school digging on my interests.

Also haymaker, do you still happen to have pg_icepick_B2? It would seem that finger hosted everything on his personal server which is now down. But if we had our own copy of it, we could easily add it to the site (along with new screenshots of it). Of course, we could always just ask him for it.

I would add it as a star map, if only it had some screenshots. We can't show users a map with out a download or even screenshots!

[EDIT]: Well, it would seem I DO have a copy of the map labeled: dm_icepick, so I don't know if that's the latest version or not. But I just got through playing through it, and that is the one done by him (and I also agree it's star map worthy)

Well, yeah that's what I meant by great design. Everything in that map is well designed, very structured and organized and distinct, everything seems to have an obvious purpose and you can't really find anything and think "well why is that there?".

Anyway, I just wasn't sure what the quality bar for this star rating was.
