yup, my account got hijacked... I just got through sending a support ticket and proof :uncertain:

The whole thing was automatic because it happened as soon as I clicked it (after receiving the same message from fatstrings)

Damn, normally I'm safer than this; agh, I looked at the link and thought it was legit.

Steam is usually really good with this stuff, you should probably have your account back within 2 weeks.

Just hope he doesn't hack or anything.

EDIT: Everybody has a cat avatar in this thread 'cept for riven.

Just thought I'd note it, and therefore add more fuel to orph's "snarkpit is being taken over by cats" statement.

Two weeks, really? dang, so much for the competition ;(

I was hoping it would be like a day. But I guess if it's moving that fast, Steam support must be inundated with hijacked accounts all the time.

And yea, all I had to do was click the link. My new policy now will be to always respond back to them asking them about it. but of course, now that I remember, he did log off too when that happened. Great. :flame:

Well really what i meant by that was that would be the absolute maximum time you would have to wait, any longer would be very odd, i forgot my password before, and my secret question was all screwed up, so i sent steam my user account, a cd key off the account, asked them for a password change, and they changed it the day i asked for it.

Now i am a lot more careful with my password, and now that i think about it, i think i haven't changed my secret question yet... hmm, need to do that now.

But yeah, you should probably expect for your situation, max time you would wait is 3 days, no longer.

Ah that's good news. 3 days isn't too bad. And I've already gotten a few calls from friends who've clicked the link. They got theirs hijacked as well.

Zein I'm glad nothing happened. But I wouldn't imagine changing your password before might help but if you did, definitely after would help. All I did was click the link. It didn't load a page for me. And next thing I knew I was logged-off. And when I went to check my e-mail, sure enough two Steam confirmation messages were in my inbox. One said it was a message confirming my e-mail had been changed and the other confirming that my password had been changed.

All that from just clicking a link in a steam chat window.

Yeah I did do it after, but man! I hope steam destroys the website. That has never happened to anyone I knew, that could become a HUGE virus and spread like wildfire!

You sent the link to me as well RIVEN, I click it and it opened what looks like the Steam web page and it wants you to log on. I didn't and then sent you a message asking you about your sisters wedding, if she liked the microwave I got her. I was attempting to see your response to know for sure. Slightly after my gmail account was hacked. But I saved it now. I just changed all my passwords for everything I do online...

Wow.. Good thing I'm not very "Steam-active" nowadays, and never click links without confirming with the sender first. I'm guessing Valve is handling that as we speak though. They wouldn't let something like that take over.

EDIT:

Topher, is that the 'copy cat' in your avatar?

Ah, I just remembered. I did not lose my account simply by clicking that link The page looked like the steam login page and I filled my info out not giving it a second thought.

stupid thing is: I had avoided this very same con act before. I completely didn't even think twice about it.

So there you have it, it wasn't from clicking the link alone that did it, it was from filling in my username and password on their site form field. I should have remembered that.

now I feel really stupid, ugh. Hopefully since it's automated, it won't use my account to buy more games or get banned. Ugh, I'm gonna try and sleep tonight, but it'll be tough.

When you said that I immediately thought of the mapping competition that Riven is participating on. But it's good that it will probably take only 3 days.

There have been many people trying to hijack my account.. 5 or so.

Every one of them tries it on the same way. They direct you to a site and say that you can get a steam game for free. When you go there you can see it really looks like the steam site. Basically it's just some edited HTML version of the site. You just need to fill in your log in information there and you're screwed :ghost:

Edit: Ok the fake Riven has sent me the same message now.

11:16 AM - Riven: helloo plis join my group <removed site url for others safety> thx xD !

Yeah I hope no one else got into this, and I hope I never see this again. I haven't checked the steam user forums, but im pretty sure they are flooded with this nonsence. I dont even know why people hack accounts? You can't play the games because you have to DL them, and even if u did there is a high chance steam shuts down the account until further notice.

Yea, both my friends and I were able to retrieve our Steam accounts. Everything is back now! Whoo. Glad that's over. ~o)

I've changed my password to something I can't remember now so that I have to think more (look up) when asked to enter it ever again. And also I validated my e-mail. I had no idea about that feature. I thought it was already required. I've had my Steam account since 2003, I'd figure it was like that by default. Well, I've learned my lesson; shame it had to be this way. Thanks guys for the support. :hee:

And I hope fatstrings will be able to get his fixed as well!
