Only youtube users would create a country war over a freaking bagpipe song...

I'm starting to guess that swearing isn't allowed here, eh?

Counter-Strike Source with new lighting?

In all honesty I looked at the screenshots and it dosen't look good to me. It seems they've just added over exposed HDR lighting which looks worse than the original lighting. Also Aztec and Cbble look much darker which will have certain negative gameplay effects.

The spelling mistakes (although the "guy" is German) and missing thumbnails/links on the ModDB profile aren't very promising either. The videos are pretty poor too. :uncertain:

I wouldn't get my hopes up because this mod will never be released.

Because Valve are bringing CSS to the OB engine anyway?

Never heard of it, but the graphics of CSS are already good enough to me.
Still a nice improvement on some maps though!

Yeah I was not all that impressed either.. I did like the skybox in Aztec he had though, but the map did look far too dark and I hated the new lighting.

Even if Valve wasn't this mod is dead in the water. Whenever a mod page has 'needs modeler, mapper, and coder' and 'I'm just the publicity guy' on it you can write it off with total confidence.

All I'm saying is sure, you could write that mod off as never ever being fully developed, but to discount it completely just seems premature because you never know if something could happen to allow the mod to grow. Maybe like a scenario where someone sees this mod and decides to take it on, and then it would get finished. Then the early assumption that it was never going to go anywhere might be a "premature" assumption in that sense. But where all the evidence points now, like you said, "with confidence" I agree with ya. I just like to say it with less of a pessimistic wording. That's all. :p

Forgive my ignorance please, I've gone mad with my university studies, but can someone please elaborate for me what the 'OB" engine is? I don't seem to be able to recall ever hearing what it is.

If I recall correctly, it's the source engine version from episode 2 and later. (As I learned from Riven)

OB = ORANGE BOX. It comes from the color of the box Valve released Half Life 2 in.

http://orange.half-life2.com/

Since the engine was updated, people refer to that version of the engine as the OB Engine.

Aaahh, thanks gents, I seem to have been uninformed.. I thought it'd just be called the Source engine even after the Orange Box updates.

Well, it still is called the Source engine. Nothing has officially changed. It'll still read "Source" on the back of the box. It's only refering to that version of Source, because it offers so many new updates. And because some of the actual Source games use it.

In fact, with the latest SDK update, Valve has unofficially re-named all the different engine versions again. So technically the "Orange Box" engine version doesn't really exist any more, because even that now has been split.

Check it out, update your Source SDK and load it up. You'll see how they categorize it. They call it:
  • Source Engine 2006
    -Half-Life 2
    -Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
    -Half-Life 2: Episode One
    -Counter-Strike: Source
  • Source Engine 2007
    -Half-Life 2: Episode Two
  • Source Engine 2009
    -Team Fortress 2
    -Portal
    -Day of Defeat: Source
Now you might notice in the SDK list that HL2:EP2 is also listed in the 2009 list, but that's an error that they can't remove. Attempting to run it will make you eventually run into some errors with loading and compiling maps, so don't use that one, technically it shouldn't be there. And now with the new CS:S Beta, they will have CS:S running in the 2009 version of the engine soon (the beta already is)

So there ya have it. That's the official new lay of the land with the current Source engine tech. :D

Well, I have no idea what the internal name or variant may be, but I might presuppose that it was probably developed along side EP2 and so is it's own variant of the Source engine. It has different features, and relies on a few different shaders. As I understand it, it was designed by a different team, as like an off-shoot of Valve itself, and the team was the result of an in-house merger between Valve North and Valve South (previously known as Turtle Rock Studios). This was Turtle Rock's pet project I imagine and after the merger, they took advantage of the reworked engine for EP2. So, that's why it get's its own SDK. And I would simply call it the L4D Source engine IMO because it's treated that way in code already.
