This is gonna sound a little lame...

I'm wondering if anyone else here uses a G5? I can't for the life of me remember if I'm supposed to able to see a red laser from the lens, like my MX518 used to show. 'Cause thre's nothing there, although the mouse seems to function fine ( albeit random Windows freezing and sometimes an inability to click the taskbar ).

FWIW I tried a firmware upgrade and the app kept returning "No G5 Found" :pccrash:

QuickTip: there are no visible light laser mice ... if you can see the light, it's optic, in which case it's an LED, not a laser. (and has a lower DPI). If it is a laser mouse, it'll be IR (uses less power and can't hurt your eyes)

In either case, it's a good idea to get a mouse pad ... made for your mouse type, they do wonders for the trackability.

If this is the G5 you have http://www.logitech.com/en-us/428/359 Then it is a laser mouse not an optic mouse and you should see no light. (The MX518 is an optical mouse)

I've never heard of a mouse with updatable firmware before >_> (Not denying it, I can plainly see that it has a firmware update ... that's just weird on Logitech's end)

Anyway there's more info about the G5 here that could help you out: http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9973/kw//related/1/session/L2F2LzEvc2lkL2NrVEc4WnVr

Thank you sir. Much clarified. And to think there's even a web page directly answering my question, now I feel like I don't know how to search!

Of course after the original post I got home and found the wheel had stopped working, which cramps my style badly. Looks like the G500 is the way to go...

See if you can utilize Logitech's warranty. It usually involves an outright replacement (without you needing to send the current mouse in).

Also, a lot of the mechanical problems Logitech mices can have are very easily fixed by cleaning or nudging stuff around, you could try opening it up and poking around too.

I got two working VX revolutions this way :D

That is the exact same mouse I'm using now. About the wheel, haven't you accidentally pressed the button behind the wheel? It'll make the mouse scroll, scroll without stops (or 'clicks')

Oh it has a Microgear wheel? If you've owned it for less than a year ... that's covered under their we'll replace it warranty (as long as you have the receipt)

Otherwise, those gears issues are easy to fix.

Thanks for the input guys, yes the wheel is toast, won't scroll or work as a button either :(

I've heard good things about Logitech's HW support also, I'll give that a shot. Though I'm tempted to open 'er up and tinker.

Opening it voids the warranty, so check that first.
