Thank you sir. Much clarified. And to think there's even a web page directly answering my question, now I feel like I don't know how to search!
Of course after the original post I got home and found the wheel had stopped working, which cramps my style badly. Looks like the G500 is the way to go...

Oh it has a Microgear wheel? If you've owned it for less than a year ... that's covered under their we'll replace it warranty (as long as you have the receipt)
Otherwise, those gears issues are easy to fix.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Opening it voids the warranty, so check that first.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.
