Pulled this right off the VERC:
Steam Dedicated Server Release Tonight; Steam Client Tomorrow
We've been making final changes to the Steam network throughout the night. Unfortunately, it's taken longer than we planned. However, the Steam dedicated server will be released this evening, and the Steam client release is now scheduled for tomorrow.
We're working to get the release out as fast as we can -- sorry for the delay, and thanks for your patience.

The problem is that "Tomorrow" has a lot of hours... I would want to know what time of day will be "Tomorrow"...

Meaning if you download it now then in a couple of days it'll be downloading patches for itself..? Hooray, an automatic updating program that spends all day updating itself!

I'm still trying to figure out why you need 500mb for steam alone, with 1GB recommended. what the hell kind of garbage do they plan on sending us?

Sorry? They're apologising for the delay of a hard-drive consuming, broadband eating useless piece of corporate crap?

Microsoft is going out about how great HL2 is as a windows platform game. I suspect they are impressed by Steam's insidiousness.

Not just that Jinx but also that the game runs with DX9, not OpenGL.

boo...hiss...last time I used the DX9.0 runtime I converted it back, it wasn't helpful, I'm not getting 9.0 until I get my Radeon.

I tried to install DX9 on my laptop and it created a fatal disk error. I hope in the future they allow the game to be run in OpenGL, like what Epic is doing with their games right now. Chances are you'll see all the "performance issues" with nVidia's cards disappear with OpenGL support.

How Spyware-ish do you think this will be? (and how open to being hijacked by spyware too...)

Spyware? No! Not at all! I mean really, who would ever think of putting any kind of spyware in a program created by one of the more fickle entertainment industries? Not to mention the fact that said company is requiring people to use it, and the fact that its supposed to be running all the time.
