Anyone know of tutorials for making sprites ? (i don't mean using them in-game). This is for for someone else and they're a mapping noob so the simpler the tutorial the better.

Making sprites is so boring and tedious, thats why theres no custom sprite resources for maps, just the old static corsshairs and such....

You need some bitmaps for the sprites you want, and a program such as Sprite Wizard- as the name suggests, it takes you through one of those wizard, step by step things to make a sprite (animated or not). It's pretty easy to use, and comes with instructions.

A few other things to note with sprites:
  • 16x16 resolution I'm afraid, just like textures.
  • They should be preferably circular, as when the player looks at them, if any of the sides are at 90degs, then they could cut into nearby surfaces and look wierd.
  • Also make sure that they fit the style of your map and don't look to colourfull/bright for what you want them for.

Also, sprites are not at all effected by lighting - you may need to create several versions of the same sprite for different lighting conditions. Or, at least, I did.

you see.. links like this are lost in obscurity.. we should have a system to where, if we have a needed and useful link, we can submit it to a special place and have it added to the links page as if it were a review, or a tut..

weeks from now, this sprite thread will be gone, and so will this editor.. :/

......Goto control panel and click submit in the left hand menu.....this is exactly what that thing is for, if I'm not mistaken.

Actually (I think), it's not 16x16 resolutions rather values divisible by 8 [to a maximum of 256 high and 256 wide for sprites].

You said we need a system where we can add useful links we have to the pit's links, right?

It exists already, and has for quite some time. the way you add a link is goto control panel, on the site, not on your computer and the menu on the left has submit, you can submit links there that will benefit the entire commuity, so useful things like this don't get lost.

what you say is true, i helped implement that, but we do not yet have a system to honor specific tuts on other sites.. i mean, how would we add this link "the sprite editor" to the current system as it stands?

i know i am flubbing this, but i know what i want to mean, i am not sure you get my gist..

well I made some custom sprite packs :
http://www.cryotank.net/maps/textures/index.html

the flares are pretty nice, though the others aren't terribly useful imo aside from the custom fire sprite maybe.

I think I'm about the only person who's ever done a custom sound pack, too
