As in actually use - free space doesn't count. Stuff you burnt to CDs/DVDs doesn't count. Stuff that would be taking up space if you had it installed, doesn't count. If you have some clever RAID thing where all your data is there twice, you don't get to claim both copies  (figures in gigabytes)

I'm always running on empty. I have an 18.6GiB HDD, and it's always full - mostly because I dual boot Slackware 9.1 and Windows 2000 (Windows purely for games, although Deus Ex runs very nicely under WineX).

Good god man! You can get yourself an 80 gig drive for ?40... but hmm that's 100AUD which sounds more expensive.

I'm poor and lazy. Actually, it works out really well this way. Since I run games on a 6GiB partition, I never have to worry about not being able to save my work due to too many saved game.

I've got 150 of 240 used up - dual 120 gig HDs
As far as what's on it... I have on my system drive 10.5 gigs of downloaded files (demos, patches, driver updates, etc. etc.), 11.3 gigs of (mostly self-encoded) mp3s, downloaded videos directory (game trailers and music videos), and Max and Maya.
On my other drive, my Nightwatch development folder is just over 2 gigs, I have a large directory of 3dBuzz video tutorials (10.6 gigs), and my games collection (currently installed) uses up 60 gigs on its own.
Oh, and I have 6 gigs in my general editing directory (editor downloads, textures, tools, etc) and about 3 1/2 gigs in my .rmf directory.

I have an old 20GB disk, and a newer 40 GB thing... Using Fedora Core on a 10 GB partition, and 5 10GB vfat partitons for windows XP. I've got around 10-15GB free at any time. Most of it's taken up by applications and games. I'm thinking of getting another HD... Don't know whether I should, or just wait till the prices settle a bit on the 80gig discs.

I have an 18.6gig drive, but with Win XP pro it takes up 4gigs to itself so I only have a 14gig drive essentially. And I have to try to fill it up.
Heh, you guys filling to the brim a 120gig drive... thats a helluva lots of "questional material"

I got a 40 GB Drive and it just has a few games, the rest is devoted to game development stuff like Vis Studio, GMax, PSP, RM2k, GTKRadiant, RenderWare crap, DirectX 9 SDK, and other assorted s**t.

There are plenty of types of data that take up large amounts of disk space - my audio design classes fill up five gigabytes a week. Why does everyone assume that lots of disk space usage == pron/downloaded movies?

I have 200Gb of space or so, currently I use around 85Gb, thats not including all the movies I haven't copied down yet, so I'd use between 120 and 200 gigs. My m8 is getting 0.5Tb lol... he has a lot of anime movies and stuff.

I think 1024 would be the more exact measurement, though of course that's still approximate.

the 120gig drives seem to be at a reasonable place on the pricing curve. i got me one today. i could've got one for 55 quid, but i paid 60 for one with an 8mb cache. dunno what that is, but it seemed worth the extra fiver.

500 gigs eh? That would be nice. I have about the same set up as KFS there. (becides the Nightwatch stuff lol). My game folder is only 43 Gb.
And I think Bit Torrent on my OS-drive is taking up a lot of space because the torrents 'virtually' allocate all the space they will need before they're done.
But other then that, I have 3 image manipulation programs installed as well as some Discreet software. (and a s**t load of games) I had .NET but since my dad kind of tricked me into installing it (He said it was actually good, what a lie) I took that off, it freed up about 6-7 Gb, or something like that. Also, I keep a shared folder on my computer so of all the useful files I download (demos, patches, drivers) I put them in that folder and share them over my network
My friends really like it when they come over, because we usually don't have to download anything else ... I'm a patch-pack-rat so I have them already lol.
[EDIT]
8mb cache: just like a cache for a CPU, but for your HD. Basically it's there to speed it up, and 8 mb is better then your standard 2 mb. Look it up for more detail, I'm not going to explain caches here ... it's a rather lengthy explination as to what they are actually doing.
Oh, also, if you ever wondered where disk space when in Windows, be aware that they count up to 1000 not 1024 bits, kb, and mb. Doesn't that suck? lol They might use that space for system files, I'm not sure though.
[/EDIT]
