I picked this bit of trivia up on NPR radio yesterday, no fair going to the website to look up the answer.

1st question- what is it in hardwood trees that make them hard.

something to do with the grain.

and whatever it is, balsa wood has it, and falls into the hardwood catagory.

i would prefer this thread remain pure, but i know the chances of that happening.. still if you can guys, quote the question you think you can solve, so we can stay straight at least.. i do plan on posting more questions in a bit so.. post away guys.. :smile:

I'd say it's the stacking of the dead wood cells (Xylem, I believe?)

Either that, or the water in the live cells (Phloem?).

Xylem and phloem are actually "veins", as it were.. I think - they move water and minerals up from the root to the leaves and the flower/fruits.

skeletor has the funniest answer for sure, but no cigar guys.. keep working on it.. but the answer is, its much more basic than you might think. think "food"

second question: you have a trailer connected to your vehicle, you are traveling, the direction is unimportant, in that you could be backing up as well and the answer is the same.. "the question is, are you pulling, or pushing that trailer?"

Pulling sounds too simple, so I'll go for pushing :smile:

or is it one of those trick questions, where its really the vehicle thats doing the push-pulling. or where your travelling by train today, and your vehicle is parked. or some other sneaky answer.

You're pushing it. When the trailer is going forward, tacked onto the behind - the small "plug" that goes in the hook is attached to the car, and is the moving force. It pushes against the hook, pushing the trailer forward.. i think...

in fact wait, i'm beginning to doubt myself orph, is this a trick? :razz:

no, no trick, you are in deed pushing it, no matter the direction, a better terminology would be towing the trailer, instead of the more common term "pulling it"

you are pushing cause, the hook is in front of the ball its attached to.

The answer depends. If the trailer is hitched the your vehicle just like normal. It could be both. If you are driving forward, you are pulling the trailer. However, if you are in reverse, you are pushing the trailer. :biggrin:

i thought it would be? if you were going forward the trailer would be behind you,following you, hence you would be pulling it.

if you were reversin you would be pushing the trailer......

you are pushing cause, the hook is in front of the ball its attached to.

but the car is in front of the hook......

sighs and breaks out pen and paper to draw stick figures

in order to be "pushing something, the driving force must be behind it, hence the ball is behind the hook, the direction of travel not withstanding, the ball will still remain behind the hook..

i cannot make that any simpler.. i am sorry if it still is unclear, maybe some of our college attendee's can do it :biggrin:

you are confusing the hook on the chain, with the tow hitch.. the part that covers the ball when you connect the two together, is called the hook sometimes.

It looks like its in the order you sign on. Meaning the person at top has been signed on the longest ... in otherwords it's a que :smile: Which is a very simple algorithm. It's the only pattern I see. (this means in the data structure used names are added only one end and they are removed only on the opposite end, whether it's the beginning or end of the structure doesn't matter.)

No its not, cause I loged myself out then back in again and I appeared smack in the middle of the list.

i think I'll be sporting and give this one to y'all..

lep knows as he is the one who informed me.. its by seniority.. member number as it were.. as you log in, it re-arranges the list by seniority :smile:

hardwood trees are hard because they store, or lock away small portions of the carbon they get from the CO2 they breathe. slower growing hardwoods are harder cause the carbon is more dense..

anyways, thats my understanding.
