I'm making a new thread coz the old one was getting cluttered with other stuff about other things . . . i'll just put the question plainly: why is steam so unstable, is it really spywarey? why does it take so long to do its stuff? why does it always freeze half-way through stuff, half-way thru downloading cs 1.6 etc . . . HELP

Well, its hard to belive all the sigs are legit, valve will think the same.
Personally I think it is too early to start hyper ventilating over the new software. If its crap then I'm sure they'll do what they can to make it better, "it makes business sence" right. If Steam sucks 6 months from now then yea, screw it and forget it.

lol, that petition is laughable, If I where an employee at valve I would read it, giggle a little and send it into the spiraling eternity of my trash can. The "petition" even has spelling/grammer errors, who is going to take that seriously. The bottom line it that valve stands to make MILLIONS off of HL2 regardless of peoples opinions of steam, most buyers will be compleatly unaware of the "steamer" and wont regard it in their purchasing choice. Pissed as some of you may be about Valves new steam system I bet you'll still go down to the local electronics store and purchase HL2.

Steam is just pure s**t, and it`ll always be pure s**t...
Steam offerd CS 1.6 over it when it first went public beta, and well basically to sum it all up "CS 1.6 destroyed my passion for CS"...Well, that and all the so called "l337" 8 year olds who like to use their squeeky voices on their microphone throught the entire game...

I honestly think this could lead to Valve becoming Ion Storm and not Austin, the bad one. Gabe Newell, John Romero 2.0!!! Freeman's gonna make your crowbar his bitch!

Assume for a second you're in Valve's position. You can do one of the following:
[A] Make some few thousand (yes, a mere few thousand compared to the masses that have bought HL) fans (which most will give up and download/use Steam anyway) "happy" and take out all implementation of Steam in HL1.
[B] Go through with the damn thing that you (Valve) has already put in many resources towards developing. Thus, eventually bringing Steam use to the mainsteam and possibly getting a greater profit selling HL2 by cutting the retailer out of the formula. Not to mention a much easier way to offer technical support and delivering patches.
Of course Steam sucks right now. It's gotten it's first glimpse of a public release, and isn't anywhere near being ready. But Valve is going to go through with this whether you like it or not. And if you don't... Then I guess you won't be playing any multiplayer in the future. In the end they're still trying to get a profit here.
