Ive been throwing this around my head for a few months now. When I first started with Half-Life; I played a good 4-5 months without any editing (due to the fact that I didnt know such an immersive world existed). Now; being a level-designer of somewhat "amatuer" design and skill methods, I have found that I do not play as much as I use to. Every few weeks, or months, I'll indulge in some HLDM, or maybe even try a new modification thats been getting a lot of hype from the community; but in the end, I find out I really like the game, and once again I begin editing more than playing.

So here is my question for you:

Do you like playing games more; or editing games more?

if we are talking FPS, i would rather map.

if we are talking TBS.. then Civ II rox.

if we are talking RPG, then fallout 2

if we are talking RTS then its empire earth.

few other games capture my attention long enuff to be noticed..

I used to play alot, but now... there arent any games that can old my attention for more than an hour or so. Mapping though, I can easily spend 8+ hours at a stretch.

I do both equally really. I've been playing more than mapping recently, because I've got a sort of creative block I just can't shake. :/

Yea but when Hl2 gets going I'm sure you'll dive in again at some point.

Edit: I'd edit any day over playing a game, I've always been like that. The first game I remember doing custom stuff with was Excite bike for NES. You could make your own custom tracks, then came the warcraft games, starcraft, nes games like metroid (metedit). Eventually I got into HL.

I don't know if I can answer this question.

I couldn't imagine one without the other, to be honest.

I couldn't imagine editing a game purly for editing purposes and not out of the eventual outcome and how entertaining or fun it would be.

However, I couldn't play an amazing game and not think of the possibilities of things that could be created.

I just think they go hand in hand, however, I have noticed that sometimes when people map more often then play, their maps aren't much fun to play and more or less turn into a pain in the ass task. (Not talking about anyone specific at the pit or anything like that.)

I don't think you could give up either (Or rather, I couldn't give them up), but more specifically, I don't think you could give up playing games if you still create, edit, or map (for) them.

Bit of both really, I "map" for loads of games noone really plays, lots of RTS's or TBS more than FPS though.

I put it down as play in the snarkpit context..

Well I play a whole load of games, and most of them have no editing potential (basically, I'm a console junkie  ). HL is the only game I possibly prefer editing to playing, but these days even that is questionable. Basically, I'm more a gamer I think.
