I dont know if its a model, or what it is.. but its used in tons of maps. Its the black one that hangs from the ceiling on a cord, then kinda fans out in the bottom and has a light bulb. most people put a nice white glow around it.. do you know what im talking about? if not i can take a screenshot.. anyways, i need to find it, and would appreciate any help

just taking a stab in the dark but since "everyone" uses it it most likely came with halflife. You could try getting half-life model viewer and checking out the models in the pak0.pak. I don't know what your talking about specifically so if its not in there don't hate me.

I believe you are talking about a model, and no it does not come with HL standard. the glow effect is just a glow sprite centered on the model with a rendermode of "additive"
I don't know where to find the particular model you are talking about. however, a quick google search for HL models should turn up somthing.
I expect you will have to place several light entities in order to get the exact lighting you want but all that is up to you...

In Day of Defeat, try models/mapmodels/mawibse_lamp_01.mdl.
Be sure to grab GCFScape if you need to get any models from Steam.
