... That would be a "hacked" version of steam ... not an alternative. Also meaning no one here can help you on the forums.

its like that: Non-Steam is a program that allows you to play HL & CS without steam. There are a lot of Non-Steam servers which can only be accessed by Non-Steam users. But if you install a tricky file pack you can play on steam servers too. This doesnt belong to the official non-steam installation. you can also allow steam users to connect to your non-steam server. Its not as you call it just a hacked steam version.

Is there a list somewhere of servers still not using steam? A search turned up a couple of patches and there even seems to be someone running some kind of WON server, but I didn't find any actual game servers.

well, seems like its a bit too complicated to run a dedicated non-steam server with a router. maybe we will use steam although I hate steam or maybe we wont be putting up the server, because its like wasting a key. We got several accounts for steam, but if we used one for creating a server this account would be missing when were playing with a some more players. Anyways, I found a good server running lots of maps its called Z123? Fairplay I dont remember the clan name beginning with Z but thats a good server. I dont like some changes to HL like spawn invinciability and stuff, but they didnt change for example weapons or movement. You should try it. you can vote maps and the admins are online often and willing to add maps. like my maps are all play/voteable if you think its time for some 1337_street hahaha ^_^

I got good news and bad news:
good first: we succeeded in putting up a server and its always full.
bad news: my friend who's connection we're using thought it was cooler to make a CS Source NonSteam Server and so this is what he's running now.
what a pity. try ZX83 Fairplay for custom map server though. not a super ping but nice admins and lots of maps.
