Li-Ion memory reset utility

Im looking for a utility (or methode) of resetting the charge memory for my laptop batery. Since under full charge the batery gives me abour 120 seconds worth of juice.

Li Ion bateries ahve some kind of memory to it that indicates when the battery thinks its fully charged. So if you charge the battery when its half dead instead of fully drained, and you do this all the time, the battery will think that the time it takes to charge it from half dead is in fact the time to charge it when it is fully empty. So when you do drain the battery completly, when you charge it, it only will charge half way.

Something like that.

I highly doubt there is a system for recording the "charge history" in those batteries. I suppose it is possible that you might employ such a system to prevent over-charge, but should you invalidate that system you might end up with a significantly destructive explosion. Bye bye laptop

How old is this battery precisely? What is the usage history of the computer? As I've said before, these batteries slowly degrade in charge capacity over time, and yours my simply be worn out.

Umm the laptop is second hand and so is the battery so I've no idea. But the computer repair store I do coop at said that either search for a utility (I have but not found one for my model of laptop) or stick the battery in the freezer overnight.

i think TB would be interested to see any utility you may have located, even one not intended for your pc..

Look at the file BATRECAL.exe Its supposed to reset the memory of the battery. Hey Im no expert :biggrin: Im just doing what Im told.

Anyways, with that said, I've had my laptop battery in the freezer for the last hour. We'll see how things go.

Seriously, I've gone to a few where the person would make crap up on the spot. Like: "No, this new CD Drive has been re-inforced, so now, it CAN support your drinks".

Yes I do realise sometimes its BS that they say, however, I had heard somewhere before about putting the battery in the freezer. I forget where. And these guys are fairly trustworthy. A) Since I do coop there and help them out for free. And B) They arent the kind of store just looking for profit.

Anyways, we'll see how things go.

you know, i have always heard that putting batteries in the refrigerator will prolong the charge they currently have, but the freezer?

extreme cold is as bad as heat.. the fluids within the battery can expand and burst the container.. i hope you put this battery in some kind of a holding.. the fluid may have your mother boxing your ears

Actually, nothing happened. I opened the freezer door to reveil the battery still in one piece. So thats good. But the damned thing still wont hold a charge.

Yeah, there are a lot of schemes that claim to rejuvinate batteries. I don't think any of them work. The best thing to do (and this doesn't help you at all), is to use the abttery how it was designed, i.e. either empty it completely before recharging, or try to keep it topped up all the time. I don't know the chemistry of it, but I do know if you do the wrong one for the battery you have, it will die a lot sooner.

Im trying BATRCAL.exe right now. It says it takes 6 hours. If that doesnt work, then I'll get a new battery. I was just happy that I got this laptop for free. Minus the effort to get it back into working order.

I had to clean the insides, fix the cooling fan, play around with the display connector to get the screen working.

And to think they were going to toss it away...

I think that if I can get a working battery, if ever I wanted to sell it I could easily get 500 for it.

lol Jeff. I didnt say I wanted to sell it, I was mearly stating the laptop's approximate value referencing used laptops for sale around here.

For example, the place I do coop at are selling a refurb laptop for 475$

8gb drive (or was it 10)
CD drive (I think a 24 speed)

Well, number one it's a laptop.

Number 2: I have a ThinkPad 600. While it kicks ass and I love it. It's very outdated. It can barely run HL in software mode (not that laptops from the 90s were meant to run games of any kind).

And usually, with laptops they skimp on video.

Mine works really well actually. I just need to swap the HD out, maybe buy a new one. Because the speed isn't really an issue. It runs pretty fast in conjunction with the 163Mb of Ram (<- remember, it has internal ram too, I think it's like 32 or so).

I had to buy a battery online though, because mine died ... horribly. It was like $50. (I am talking about the Battery battery, not the CMOS battery).

CMOS batteries cost like MAYBE $8. and you can pretty much get any that is the right size and voltage/resistance.

I just need that damned WiFi card now, then I'd be set.

I have an ethernet card for my laptop too, actually eight to be exact. I just want it to be wireless ... and work with Linux, damned 3com and their Windows loving.

Windows ME EWWWW. If you're going to use Windows, at least put XP Pro on it or 2000. WinMe is such a piece of crap. And if you think it might not be able to run it (like a lot of people) my laptop (which I'm using right now) runs it just fine and it has signifigantly lower specs then the notebook your "repairing"

Actualy the only reason I put ME on it is because under the laptop there is a Win ME CD key. I dont have my Win XP pro CD and was too lazzy to get it from my buddy Phil, and I dont have a Win 98 CD key. Sorry Orph, forgot about 2000.

And Im trying to perhaps install a Linux on it. Once I figure out which one to get... :sad:
