i wouldn't even begin to know.. i guess maybe i was lucky to stumble across it.. somehow it just made sense, i wanna go down, the down arrow goes down.. shrugs

you see though, its proof that just because its simple, by no means does it signify that everyone knows about it.. my friend [DRS]Misery and I started mapping on basically the same day, 2 years later i had the pleasure of visiting him at his home in indiana.. his mapping style and techniques were all, or mostly different than mine.. by the end of the visit, we had cued each other up to speed on a lot of obscure details.. it was a very profitable visit.

He should have taught you how to use multi_managers

As for the original topic, that screenshot is pretty disappointing. Why is everything brush-based? The engine is capable of handling a lot more.

I just simply select all my brushes and entitities through the 3D view window.

Same here, I like to visually place my brush and watch it while using my mouse in the 2d views.

I love VisGroups. The interface for it is pretty bad though. Would be
much better if it worked like Photoshop layers, with new brushes
automatically going into the currently selected VisGroup. But stuff I
use VisGroups for:
  • Saving a "selection" of brushes, in case I need to move them or
something. Don't want to bother re-selecting all of them and don't want
to group them either.
  • Hiding clip brushes, hint brushes.
  • Hiding old rooms or architecture that I might want to salvage later, as opposed to deleting them.
  • Hiding info_nodes to reduce grid clutter.
See? Useful. Practical. Use them!

me too.. it's so simple and fast with the keys + mouse for navigating the camera (like playing 'forsaken' ). If you're positioned right you always select the brush/entity you want and once selected you can manipulate it in the 3 views... so imo easier and faster then visgroups, but i can imagine it could take you some time to getting used to navigate yourself in 3 degrees of freedom instead of 2.

You can use all 3 2D views to a great advantage if you understand how to use them correctly. By this I just mean using 3 2D views to navigate through you map as if it was a 3D view.

In some ways you could distinguish not using Vis-Groups a skill. Simply
and purely because I can recognize alot of my brushes in the 2D views
even when cluttered. Although using vis-grouping depends, if you want
the easy road or not.

actually, mine was born from necessity.. remember guys, most of you have the luxury of making your maps on a nice big machine.. i made almost all of mine on an old K62 400 with 196 megs of ram and a 16 meg voodoo banshee.. once a map reached a certain size, it became either sluggish, or non-responsive because the video card couldn't draw it all.. visgrouping was the only way i could map.. making most of your map invisible was a distinct advantage..

don't knock visgroup users.. most were forced to use it.

dont use visgroups in fact dont use any grouping at all whatsoever anywhere in life including commas and exclamations and the like just use everything you can together and its a lot easier to work with in fact its very useful because youre saving bandwidth and visgroups are for sissies

The map I'm currently working on (my school) has a visgroup for each floor, and for the stairwells and other such areas. Works nicely.

I also use visgroups for entities for different mods, if I'm making a map for more than one mod.

A temporary "Vis group" could be clicking on an object you want to build next to, and use that object as a reference when making your new object.
