Well I've bought the Silver pack and have downloaded the Source SDK. I've installed it and went to run it but found myself sitting there for ages. On average I have to wait about 20-30 seconds for a command to be performed in Hammer!
I'm running a Pentium4 2.8Ghz with HT, 1Gig of Corsair DDR RAM, an Abit AI-7 motherboard and a Geforce4 Ti 4200 128mb.
Does anyone know what the hell's going on!?

Try unloading the trillions of textures that come preloaded in the editor. I got rid of all but one of those packs and it now runs just fine on my poky old 1-GHz.

I had that at first, but then I shut down hammer, logged of steam and then went bk on steam and loaded up the hammer and it stopped lagging. I still have all the preloaded textures.

Thanks guys, it was a combination of your suggestions that fixed the problem. I unloaded some of the textures and tried restarting Steam and Hammer a couple of times. It seems to be getting better each time I load it up, so thanks  .
I also did a disk clean-up and defragged my drives. So if anyone has the same problem, you know what to do.

Oh yes, and note that if you unpack the GCF file you can start hammer without running that stupid launcher window from steam. You still have to have steam running though.

also, don't forget to reduce the number of allowable undos and reduce the max viewable distance of brushes and models in the 3d view
