What files do I need to backup before I install steam? I haven't got enough HD space to back up all of HL (it's 2.75GB after cleanup).

i dunno what you need to backup, but i'll tell you what i did backup.

1)all my .map files.

2)all my .rmf files

3) all my .bsp files

4) i EXPORTED all my ambience files.

5) i EXPORTED all my debis sounds.

6) i EXPORTED all my sprites.

7) and all my wad files.

I just leave a regular copy lying around; there's no harm really. But I suppose if you're short of hard-drive space you'll probably want to backup what Orph did.

I have backed up my rmfs and maps, and also all of the wads I have. I don't quite get what you mean by exporting though.

He means "exported from the PAK file", I think. Alternatively, you can just keep the pak file.

i made the mistake once of "moving" the files i mentioned.. only takes once

always export.

Ok I've got steam. I hope it isn't a waste of HD space and half a sunday...
