I've never found any reason to bother with a steam config. Unless you are short of HDD space and need to delete your WON installation, don't bother. The only tricky thing is, you need to make sure that all of the right resources are available under steam. Other than that you can just copy your compiled maps into the proper steam folder.

Tracer or anyone that can help when I goto compile and run my test_map (begginer here) I get half-life not responding and tells me to close.
My question is how do I set up additional game perameters?
I have this -dev -console -half-life
Is this right? just running and using half-life not making a mod or anything just need to make a simple map. I have made a room with textures, just want to be able to walk around in it

sounds to me like spooky is trying to load HL through hammer. i never liked to do that. try loading the map the traditional way, through HLDM's menu.
or, use my tutorial on HLCC.

Well like I said when I first started mapping half-life was out for awile, and there was no steam. So I was trying the old way becuase I had no clue how to set it up through steam. All I really want to do is compile and run my maps, and not have any prolems besides my own mistakes/errors. =p
Sorry Tracer for the second half....What I ment to say is that I simply wanted to make sure I have everything right so I can later compile my maps when done. Its been awile since I missed with all this always wanted to make some cool maps.
Orpheus yes loading it through Valve Hammer 3.4 its the only compiler I couldn't remember and used awile back. I will check out tutorial, and see if that helps thanks guys. Just bare with me its been a few years...I just wanted to get back to it becuase I found it alot of fun

maps fail to load for reasons. its not hammer, i just dislike using hammer as a compiler.
maps fail because:
1) there was an error during the compile and its halted. hence no map found.
2) you failed to point the destination to the maps folder.
3) you failed to place a player_start and/or a multi-player start.
4) in rare events, you actually fail to compile the correct map.
i suppose there are other reasons, but those are common ones. check into them.

Ok I had a few settings wrong. It works now I belive thanks Orpheus! Diffrent problem here sorry.... Now when I create a new map I start with a info_player_start then create the object, then I create my brush around it. Then create that object, and then I thought I applied the textures right but not seeing them in the 3D view. I'm not sure if the 3D view is working right. looking at most peoples tutorials on it looks totally diffrent than mine. Should 3D view be auto (always on) or do i need to select something? I browsed my textures selected one and when I created the brush and appliyed the texture I should see it in 3D mode, but don't.

there's a little dropdown menu in the top left corner of the 3d window. make sure you've got '3d textured' selected.

if we assume fishy is correct, please mark this topic solved (assuming you can now map and play and see your textures.)
assuming fishy is wrong (about the 3D view), please start another thread, and mark this one solved for the first question (assuming it is solved)
one question per thread please.
