OK...Occasionally....about 50% of the time when I play multiplayer, Some of the opponents look like this:

User posted image

I think this happens whenever someone on the server is using a model I don't have. When this happens, shouldn't there be an option to make that person default their model to, say, a combine soldier or something on my end so it doesn't look so f*ck*d up? IT is the freaking weirdest thing to see in motion. Again....I think I can only see models I have installed.....wtf is my problem?

edit: I googled and steampowered this problem with no results

double edit: Oh..and also certain weapons (the grav weapon in particular) will also occasionally have a purple tint over them....

hmm mine was ATI..

still try different, or newer drivers.

nVidia is savagely picky, be sure to remove all the previous drivers before installing new ones. driver clashes suck ass.

No they're not.
Every driver install I've ever done with nVidia drivers has succefully overwritten the current driver. (I imagine, if Windows has any optimization, that the current driver would be loaded and the "code" of how it works can be written over without overwriting the original driver file)

I just downloaded...I think...some new driver(s)....it was like a 17 meg download from the nvidia site....I will restart in about 20 minutes to see if it made a difference if I have time....

edit:

I say 20 minutes...because I am encoding a dvd right now that is a fairly long process...don't wanna interupt it

crono, its been a couple years since i owned an nVidia card, it was a 440MX i think, but i never successfully installed new drivers without completely removing the old ones. if that info is no longer valid i apologize, but it used to be true.

the fact that you have had different results does not belie my statement however. :/

I bought a 9800 Pro after owning a MX400 for a while. Anyway, I
didn't uninstall the old drivers and got the weirdest effect. It
appeared like both drivers were trying to draw to the screen at the
same time.

Anyway, these cursed ATI drivers have been giving me trouble off an on
since I got this card. It's a lot like my 8mb ATI card I got so I
could play Half-Life in OpenGL mode. It kept crashing in
multiplayer games until I hunted down a stupid patch that should have
been a part of the official updates anyway.

1) you did something wrong.
2) your card is broken
3) you are using generic drivers.

my 9800 runs perfectly, no glitches at all, my only trouble was when i attempted to install omegas drivers. it refused to accept them for some reason and i cannot fathom why. i reinstalled the ATI catalyst drivers again and all is well once more.

be sure to remove all traces of the old drivers, whether they are nVidia or ATI. i use regclean, but there are driver removal programs out there. use whatever it takes.
unless your card is broken, its not an ATI 9800 issue.
