I've just bought Half-life 1 from a game shop called "Chips". Its new and it cost me ?10.

Because you can only play online through Steam now, I tried to register it. It went as follows:

Browse Games, Register a Product I already own.

I type in the CD key. It registers with Steam...

...Your CD is a duplicate. This product key has
already been registered. Registration for Half-Life Platinum denied.

I'm hoping this stops me from getting Platinum (Whatever that is) and not from playing over the 'net.

It's a new game, I swear!

"PCR - Half-Life

NEW ?9.99"

What the bugger is going on?

Sorry man... that's a bummer. Apparently your CD-Key has already
been registered to another account. Victim of a CDKey gen?

I guess you have 2 options now. Get in contact with Valve and
tell them your problem and see if they can do anything about it.
You'll probably have to send them your game and proof of purchase or
something like that.

Or you could just return the game and buy HL via Steam.

That is anoying about steam sorry bud  , but what you do is you send in you CD case to valve with the CD key on front, and they will give you the game  . Just consider yourself lucky if you live in the US!

Just scan the cd-key or take a photo of it. That is enough evidence that you actually own the game.

So again, scan/photograph the CD-key and your proof of purchase, and either e-mail it to them or post this on the Steam forums. There's nowt we can do.

Actually, Valve requires you to send them the cdkey (jewel case and all) in the mail to give you a new key.

look here

There's a ten dollar fee for HL1 one though.
