During the latest Steam update, I was "strongly recommendated" to
update my Catalyst driver. I did what I was told, but after the
installation, the "c:\program files\ATI" folder is always opened when I
start Windows XP. It's freaking annoying that I have to close the
folder everytime I start Windows.
So I restored to my previous checkpoint with Windows and do without the
latest driver. I also had to turn off the Steam warning.
Lesson learned: it's better not to update any driver unless something actually isn't working right.

Run "msconfig" and turn all that crap off.. I advise to always use the newest drivers personally.. I have seen times where I regretted doing so, but that was back when ATI had poor support.
Anywho's, run msconfig and turn off all that crap thats annoying you.

I only got the drive because Republic Commando was buggering up without
it. I hate the way I have to uninstall the previous drivers with
ATI though.

I played Half-Life 2 single-player and deathmatch this morning with the older driver, and everything looked fine to me. I read the release note from ATI, and there is no specific fix for Half-Life 2 or any Steam games. Most of the changes for this driver update were made for Republic Commando, which I don't play anyways.
So I'm sticking with the old driver for now. No need to upgrade unless something turns Half-Life 2 or Far Cry buggy.

A good driver motto: If everything works, don't update.

Isn't that "ATi" directory just a place where it unpacks the installation files to? Meaning, you can delete that directory (check though)
But, it would be under msconfig.
Or the registry setting (Start >> Run >> regedit):
HKLM >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion >> Run
Delete the keys you want to in the right hand panel. There are msconfig settings stored in other places in the registry as well. Under:
HKLM >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Shared Tools >> MSConfig >> startupfolder [and] startupreg
contain directories underneath them which can be booted as well. You have to delete the directories holding the data though UNDER these directories.
rs6: Most drivers that come out now aren't really fixing anything, they're making things run faster. The problem is that some (most) developers don't test like they should.

Blame it on Microsoft, God does.
