Damn you ReNo! Why can't I live in networked a house of gamers? I'm so bloody jealous.
i am really poor, even by Arkansas standards, and i have my own network, didn't cost that much.. what is the price we are talking about where you live mike?

i pay 26 dollars a month for my dsl
i paid 100 dollars for my router
most pc's have IPX cards standard, but even tho, they only cost 5 to 10 dollars
the network wires, about 15 dollars a piece.

all total, not that much, especially if divided by many.

i did mine, all by myself...
I think he meant that we are all on a LAN as opposed to our forthcoming net connection. But to be honest the LAN doesn't get used as much as our many consoles  Our lounge has the following setup...

 Oh and that little green box is a scart box that the linked consoles plug into so we don't have to swap wires all the time. The PS2 is plugged into the RGB things though, hence the other connection.

Lep: Editing this post made the picture disappear for some reason :S

Which is why the Gamecube has not sold as well as it should have - the automatic assumption is that it's a kiddie console. Part of that is Nintendo's fault, as many of the key franchises they used were Mario and otherwise assumed as 'kiddie' games! Compare that to Halo and GTA on the X-Box and PS2. But there are plenty of non-kiddie games for it, and plenty of damn good ones at that. And you don't have to be a kid to enjoy those mario games anyway. Double Dash is a riot to play with friends, and Super Smash Bros. Melee has been a top seller since it released. Just don't underestimate it.

Correct. I can play online whenever I want, but somehow I'm just not that interested. It's not nearly as much fun as a LAN with friends.

And ReNo - I envy your console playing as well.

this may sound dumb, but whats the difference in a lan that cannot talk to the net, and my router network that can?

i mean, i can if i chose, play all 4 PC's at once, either at home, or online with the world.. doesn't my setup seem more advantageous?

if you are going to waste the money on a hub, why not buy a router instead?

The Gamecube isn't mine actually, it is my flatmates, as well as the N64 and the Megadrive...and fothcoming snes. But I still like it - Mario Kart is one of the most friend-hatred inducing multiplayers I've ever played, which is always a good sign, and games such as Pikmin and Viewtiful Joe are really nice and original. I'd say it is my least favourite of the current consoles, possibly because it isn't my own, but that doesn't stop it being great fun.

Orph, the benefit of my situation is that I live in a flat with 4 other game loving mates - soon to be 5, each with powerful PCs that can play all the latest games. So basically, I don't need to go through the hassle of setting up PCs in seperate rooms and inviting around mates - the setup is in place 24/7, as well as the people to play them. Also, a hub is significantly less pricy than a router - we paid about ?50 for our 8 port hub, whereas you paid ?100 for your router which most likely doesn't have that many ports. Obviously a router has the benefit of internet switching or whatever though.

by itself, my router can utilize 4 PC's, with additional equipment, it can route over 150 i am told..

so in essence, you are saying that i paid 2 times the price, and have internet capabilities as well.. i think i came out ahead, but its only a matter of priorities i guess.. you guys can play more PC's, but can only wish for the net.. i can play 4 and have it too..

Actually on this topic there is a question I'd like you guys opinion on. We have all our PCs connected to a hub, and when we get our net connection, we want all of our PCs connected to it. We are thinking of simply connecting our hub to a router, as well as the consoles (perhaps just the Xbox but possibly the PS2 also), and trying to work it like that. Will it work, and if so will it run ok? Obviously if all are running at once the speed would be laughable, but how about if 3 PCs were on at once say?

The alternative is to get a many port router, but that costs a load of cash and means putting to waste our existing hub and wiring.

it is my understanding, and i could be wrong, but as i said, with more equipment, i am supposed to be able to route 150 PC's.. i am assuming that the only other equipment would be multiple hub's connected to it.. so i assume, that if you hooked the hub, to the router, then the router to the net, it would indeed function properly..

my only issue was if, someone outside my router needs to download from me, its hard to circumvent my mechanical firewall..

hope that helps..

It wouldn't really matter how many connections you have going from the HUB or Router, there is a little degrade in signal when it is spliced, but for a home it's nothing to cry over. Connecting purely for sharing a connection though, I'd suggest a network switch. Since it doesn't carry the hassles of letting computers in the network see each other as well as gain access to the internet. But obviously you don't want that all the time. Also, the firewall with XP is a give and take relationship. Some programs allow you to use it some don't. Such as AIM, I am able to send and recieve files to some people but not others. And none of them have firewalls. Anyway.

On another note. The gamecube has an immpressive gameplay element. Such as I was very surprised at how fun Super Mario Sunshine is, and at it's difficulty. I know people who work at Target and such and there were (when the game came out) parent's returning the game 'angry' at Target for selling it as a kids game just because of it's difficulty.
Most of the games for the GameCube are getting back to how Nintendo started. With games that can satisfy more then the average gammer. Which is what their NES or Famicom was. It's power and popularity was from some of the games ranges of difficulty. and if the game wasn't insanly difficult it became not "can you beat it" but "how fast can you beat it". Which is still true today, but it just seems like the 16 bit and 32 bit generation lacked in the incredibly hardcore games, that required an amazing attention span to get through the game. A game that is like this now is Ikaruga  . I think the Dreamcast is what started bringing these games back  . . . poor underrated system.
