Hey Andrei, great to see you back on! Did you have an alert on? Because that was a quick post after we just got the thing back online this week.

Penguinboy: Owner of TWHL has swooped-in to help out graciously, to which I owe all my gratitude.

I'll provide a post with more details later, but please be aware, not everything is working just yet.

Wow, I thought SnarkPit was down for good, this is awesome! Time update those dead links on my maps.

Hope it's alright a friend and I are scraping the site as is and uploading it to archive.org!

Hello!
It looks like I was never particularly active on here, but it's nice to see the site's not gone regardless

Hi there! It's nice to see this old site back online! Nicely done Penguinboy!

If you or anyone will be making improvements to the site, I have a few suggestions:

1) The HTTPS version of the site uses HTTP URLs for the stylesheets so they fail to load (mixed content).

2) You can't enter an HTTPS address as your website address in your profile. "https://oskar.pm" turns into "http://https/oskar.pm".

3) When you sign up the password you just entered is included in the email. It's unnecessary and you can't be sure the contents of an email won't be read by the wrong person at some point (in a notification on your phone or if there's a badly configured email server or if you for some reason use a corporate/edu email address in which case your organization can read it if there's an audit or whatnot).

4) MSN was discontinued and MS moved users over to Skype so you could relabel "MSN" as "Skype" in the profile page

5) Search WAS broken when I checked yesterday but I guess you must have fixed that already :)

6) Some of the links at http://www.snarkpit.net/index.php?s=links are dead (might I suggest replacing them with Wayback Machine links?) and some links should use new domains and HTTPS (TWHL, Planet Phillip)

7) The links to Steam profiles aren't working. Instead of http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/********* they should link to https://steamcommunity.com/id/*********

8) If you go to your profile and try to upload a new map ( http://www.snarkpit.net/index.php?p=cp&o=5 ) you get an error about now having Flash. Flash is of course long since dead.

9) This site does not have Mission McPoker :flail:

10) If you log in at www.snarkpit.net and visit snarkpit.net you're not logged in there (but all the links take you to www.snarkpit.net)

11) The <head> tag contains <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=iso-8859-1" /> but the HTTP header has "Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8" 🎈åäö

12) Something is wrong with the post count. When I wrote this, my post count was only 2 but it should be more.

13) I really wish I was allowed to edit my posts after 30 mins :D

Our archival efforts are more or less done, we're gonna try to crawl the forums and any other weird stuff like the "horror" gallery. So if we ever lose SnarkPit again, we at least saved what we could. Links of what's done so far here:

https://archive.org/details/snarkpit.net-maps-dec-2018
https://archive.org/details/snarkpit.net-downloads-oct-2013

eukara is the man, he wrote the scripts to crawl all this intelligently!

Also thank you Penguinboy for helping bring back this great site!

List of bugs
Yeah I hate to pile on, but it seems I've found another bug: When I set my occupation on my profile, I have too many characters entered so it break the page formatting. I know this site is built with what feels ancient software, and it was never really fixed even back in the day, so I hope the repair process isn't too much of a nightmare.

Edit:

Also, I saw there will be a redesign, I just want to say my friends and I have always loved the way this site looks, so I hope if it does change, the old theme could still be supported in some way.

Thanks Potatis & Xylemon for the bug reports, I will probably leave most of the minor issues unfixed and focus on the redesign if everything with that works out. But feel free to let me know if you find any more issues!

Hey there, it's nice to see some familiar names too! :)

No, I didn't really have any notifications on - I used to log into SnarkPit periodically to see what people were posting, even if I didn't actually post anything myself; I guess I sort of retained the habit of checking on the place even after it went down.

Might sound strange, but aside from all the fond memories, I think this might just be the oldest surviving Half-Life mapping/modding community out there - it has history, it would've been a shame for it to just disappear.

And hey, with all the renewed interest in retro shooters and even goldsrc mapping (HL: Echoes in particular springs to mind) as well as the recent successes of Source 2, I think SnarkPit might just be overdue for a second youth.

Definitely glad to be here. I don't think I ever had an account before but I'd worked with Xylemon back in the day on projects like the Scientist Hunt Map Pack so I'd at least known about it back then. Pretty sure I downloaded quite a few maps from here as my archives had some map downloads with the snarkpit.net hosted file convention.

Yes, it was me who scraped the site for downloads - sorry about that by the way if it caused any issues. I just couldn't miss the chance. I personally have seen maps that I'd grown up with lost to time - a few years back I started a personal archive hoarding and scraping all I could get. That's how I was able release things like a 200+ TSRP map archive - these were maps that were solely hosted on servers and mostly never see a real release outside of RP forums (complete with content!).

When scraping the maps it was quite sad to see how many are inaccessible. I could easily process my directory listing and get a good representation of which maps have dead urls on this site. If you all are interested in perhaps a community rebuilding effort to find a lot of those maps to rebuild the local database that'd be really great. I might make a thread dedicated to that discussion?

While back then I didn't release any maps separately, I created them as part of my mods (I was known as Ranger366 when Go-Mod 2-3 were a thing, some might remember)

I still do level design for things like the game I shipped back in 2018 (The Wastes, which should totally get a game page on here :naughty:)

Thank you so much for getting this site back up Penguinboy!
And thanks Riven for activating my account manually :wcc:

eukara, it looks like the topics aren't set right on that TSRP map archive: multiple topics merged into one. The Internet Archive is getting more and more Half-Life content. I love it.

Hey All! Wow I have not been back on this site in a long while.

I am getting some issues with some of the content being hosted on HTTP instead of HTTPS. Since snarkpit is on HTTPS every sub-domain also needs to be, if not Chrome blocks them.

FYI: https://blog.chromium.org/2019/10/no-more-mixed-messages-about-https.html

When I allow mixed messages over https in chrome that fixed it.

I would also love a pet project and recreating snarkpit with existing data would be a cool idea to me so reach out if you guys are interested!

Holy hell it's wonderful The SnarkPit is back.

I was just about to go to bed and remember someone's words (possibly Riven or Leperous) saying the site will never go down. So I thought I'd give it a shot again after a couple of years.

This is great. Just wish life didn't get in the way and take away most of the free time we once had..

Would LOVE to hear everyone's experiences with life in general, and also the Half-Life universe. I played Alyx some 3-4 times, this latest time I'm 3/4 of the way through with dev commentary and it's great.

I redid my "old home in Europe" level in VR, with the little info and tutorials available for Source 2 Hammer, and it looks quite nice I think. Maybe I post some screenshots later.

Hope everyone's well!

The impossible had happened!

I did not think in a million years that the Snarkpit would be revived. But if Jesus could do it, so can it!

I was referred here from TWHL when I first became a mapper in 2002. Yes, it has been more than twenty years since I started mapping. I don't do it anymore, but I have passed on the trade secrets to my son. "Scott, I am your father".

Snarkpit was where I shared my creations with the international community. It was where I inadvertently helped someone struggling with their diagnosis of autism. It was where my hopes and fears lived and died.

Thank you, for everyone who contributed to the valiant effort in its revival. Unlike Jesus, its resurrection did not involve the hand of God . . . or did it?
