Got Billy Talent 2 and acquired the complete Black Sabbath Boxed Set with like 9 discs and they're both awesome. Billy Talent sounds a bit different than their first album, but it's a good sound. And Sabbath just rocks.

My favourite is Joker and the Thief. Check that out, Love Train, and White Unicorn. That should pretty much introduce you to them.

I was walking down the street last night and I heard this really catchy song being blasted out of this music store. So I went in, listened some more, and bought the CD. It's a Chinese rock CD by this guy called "X.T.X"

I don't know anything about him, and I haven't had a chance to play the CD here in my room yet, but from what I heard in the store his stuff sounded like a mix between Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, and maybe a little bit of the Strokes too.

Interesting combination if you ask me. Have any of you heard of him?

Apparently he's opening for "Placebo" here in Beijing next month, but I'll be home by then.

Edit: I did some googling, and I came up with this interview, which I think was a nice background on him and his band: http://www.chinastic.com/wp/reviews/?p=16

I was kinda glad I pegged the similarities to Nirvana

His website is here: http://www.xietianxiao.com/

You guys throw out a variety of recommendations  The fact that My Morning Jacket played Boneroo combined with the fact that someone who went to Boneroo thought they were the best band there just weirds me out. Always thought of it as a jam band/alternative fest.. although I guess My Morning Jacket pretty much are alternative...

I'll throw in a recommendation that I don't think has been mentioned: Joanna Newsom (needed more female singers in this thread, too)

from someone on rateyourmusic.com (this site wastes too much of my f***ing time):
Joanna Newsom sounds like a pre-pubescent Elf guarding a secret magic lair high in the misty mountains with access to a harp and a thesaurus. Okay? Okay ... be warned.
So probably not for everyone, but when you're in the mood...

Bought the new Rx Bandits album "...And The Battle Begun" direct from them, as until next month or something that is the only way to get ahold of it. I'm a big fan of the band and have all 4 of their fairly wildly varied albums, and the only disappointing thing about this one is that it isn't the massive progression that each of their last albums was. After starting out as a fairly typical ska-punk outfit, their beautifully titled album "Progress" saw them change their sound into a fairly unique blend of reggae, ska, rock, punk, and metal. "Resignation" continued this, and was their strongest album and most refined sound yet IMO, though pretty much threw ska out the window. This new album sounds, for all intents and purposes, like Resignation mark 2. Now, that really shouldn't be taken as a negative remark about the album - I guess a band can't continue to change from each album to the next, and it seems Rx Bandits have settled into their own sound now. You can listen to 3 of their new songs and a couple off their last album on their website at http://www.rxbandits.com if you want a taste of what they play.

The only Rx Bandits song I've ever heard is the one that goes...

"Your love is my infection"

"this empty needle is my unsharpened sword, I stab I stab I stab, but I can't puncture"

Yeah, so I guess it's called "infection." The last time I listend to that song I was 18, so I'm a little surprised I can still remember the lyrics right off the bat like this.

Which album should I check out? Progress?

All 4 are good albums in their own right, and I guess which is "best" would be determined by your preference in genre rather than their musical ability improving or anything. My favourite is probably "The Resignation" - the opening track "Sell You Beautiful" is one of their best songs and really sets it up nicely, and though there are a couple of tracks on there that aren't amongst my favourites, its their most distinctive and memorable album for me. Their new album is only available from their website and I've not quite listened to it enough to say if it is as good as The Resignation, but it certainly isn't too far behind. I'd say try out either "The Resignation" or "...And The Battle Begun" over their first two, but if you want something a bit more ska and a bit less...erratic (their recent songs have many changes in beat throughout), maybe their first two albums are a better choice.

Try out the media player on their website if you haven't already - the 5 songs there paint a pretty good picture of what they are like, and all are from their most recent 2 albums. Infection was the last song on "Progress", by the way, and while a good song and a perfect end to the album, it isn't one of their best for me.

Gah, you know what? Check out any of their most recent 3 albums, they all rock.

Jimi Hendrix.

That man made his guitar sing unlike anyone before or since. I don't think I could ever pick a single favorite song. Despite that, one of the songs I enjoy listening to most is an alternate version of Angel containing no instruments other than Jimi's guitar and his voice. It's really relaxing to listen to.

My favorite band is trivium. Their first 2 cds are simply screaming metal, but some of the best guitar work from 20 year olds ever. The new cd is soundsing amazing, no longer screaming and a jump towards the older metal I feel that trivium will be well known in only s a matter oftime.margin=2 leftmargin=2>

I just bought the new Taking Back Sunday album Louder Now off of iTunes music store.

I'd heard good things about the album, and they're one of my favorite bands so I have high hopes. I've listened to the first 3 songs, and so far I'm very happy with the album. 8 more tracks to go before I can make a final decision.

One thing that I've noticed so far is that while their sophomore album "Where You Want to Be" didn't strike me as very good the first few times around (I did grow to love it), I'm liking this one right off the bat which is a good sign.

I was surprised that I completely missed this album release. I was in China at the time, so I guess it's excusable.

So far, out of Snow Patrol (I've only heard the first 8 songs or so) I really like the song "Mahogany."

i dont think they were playing covers, they just dressed similar, except red, gree, and blue, however, the style of music was similar. I considered them a tribute because of the way they dressed and the ingenuity and randomness of the "instruments"

Because of Hugh and his henchmen, lately I've been listening to a lot of gypsy rock / gypsy punk. It's absolutely fantastic. Lots of energy. I specifically dig the World Inferno Friendship Society (WIFS). For first time listeners I recommend "Fiend in Wien" or "Brother of the Mayor of Bridgewater."

Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
Some kid (he's only 20- which is phenomenal) went to eastern Europe at some point, and picked up the musical styles of the area, and released this album. May he hard to find, but it's so worth it. Oddly enough, it kinda sounds like "gypsy rock." Very "eastern block" sounding, to say the least. Coincidences are cool, I suppose.

Ratatat - Classics
Two dudes, one on guitar and one on keyboard/effects hammer out some awesome hip-hop beats. No lyrics to muck it up on this album, just some awesome sounding little songs.
Shameless plug.

Monqui -- A year and a half ago Ratatat came to my school to play a small concert, but as the brits say I "couldn't be arsed" to go see it. After the concert "Seventeen Years" was played at every party I went to for the next couple months, until it got usurped by the remix of "Call on Me" as the go-to party song.

It's good to see you again Monqui, I wish my school didn't block ports so that I could get on IRC and talk music with you again. Coincidentally, I'm listening to GY!BE right now.

Oh man, Seventeen Years is from their first CD (their eponymous one), which is good, but not great I would say. They've made some serious growth since then- and Classics really does live up to the name. First CD I've actually bought in months.

And always good to hear about GSY!BE.

If you want, you can catch me on some IM platform (I think I still use all of the ones listed here still, minus the ICQ one).

I thought I'd plug in my ipod to sleep in with some relaxing music last night. The result was me staying up till about 4am searching for tracks I haven't listened to for a while.

A few light, jaunty songs I remember enjoying listening to yesterday:

Kings of Convenience - I'd rather dance with you
Phoenix - Too Young
The Postal Service - Such Great Hights
E.L.O. - Mr. Blue Sky
Die Fantastischen Vier - Geboren (German)
The Chemical Brothers - Asleep from Day
Air - All I Need
Air - Ce Matin La
Damien Rice - Eskimo

Spartan, can't say that I've heard of him.

Yesterday and late last night I was doing a lot of work on my newest art project (still have yet to start work on that table, for lack of agreement on the design) in which I'm doing a small poster sized version of this old comic panel:

Anyway, the point of this is that the most recent Coldplay album X&Y is great to draw to.

Also, I know Grey's Anatomy is a chick show, and therefore the theme song (How to Save a Life by The Fray) can't be very manly... but I'm really enjoying it right now.

I got Ziggy Marley's new album 'Love is my Religion' today, and I'm really really happy about it. I was worried Ziggy might change up from his dads style and go for something more modern and 'hip', but it's just straight reggae, and it's really good.

Much love. If you liked Bob's stuff at all, you'll like Ziggy's.

Well, Weird Al's new album got released today. It's called Straight Outa Lynwood, and I torrented it. I enjoyed listening to the song 'Don't Download This Song' simply for the irony.

Lyrics: (lol)

Once in a while maybe you will feel the urge
To break international copyright law
By downloading MP3s from file-sharing sites
Like Morpheus or Grokster or Limewire or KaZaA

But deep in your heart you know the guilt would drive you mad
And the shame would leave a permanent scar
'Cause you start out stealing songs and then you're robbing liquor stores
And sellin' crack and runnin' over school kids with your car

So don't download this song
The record store's where you belong
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh, don't download this song

Oh, you don't wanna mess with the R-I-double-A
They'll sue you if you burn that CD-R
It doesn't matter if you're a grandma or a seven year old girl
They'll treat you like the evil hard-bitten criminal scum you are

So don't download this song
Don't go pirating music all day long
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh, don't download this song

Don't take away money from artists just like me
How else can I afford another solid gold Hum-Vee
And diamond-studded swimming pools
These things don't grow on trees
So all I ask is, "Everybody, please..."

Don't donwload this song (Don't do it, no, no)
Even Lars Ulrich knows it's wrong (You can just ask him)
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should (You really should)
Oh, don't download this song

Don't donwload this song (Oh please, don't you do it)
Or you might wind up in jail like Tommy Chong (Remember Tommy)
Go and buy the CD (Right now) like you know that you should (Go out and buy it)
Oh, don't download this song

Don't download this song (No, no, no, no, no, no)
You'll burn in hell before too long (and you'll deserve it)
Go and buy the CD (Just buy it) like you know that you should (You cheap bastard)
Oh, don't download this song

The Shins - Young Pilgrims

The Beatles - Rocky Racoon

Barenaked Ladies rock.

The band is good too. Their new album is pretty bitchin. Not much different from their old stuff, but that's not a bad thing

never heard of Guster I'll have to check them out, if they are in the same list as The Shins and The Beatles they have to be worth listening to
