The popularity of System of a Down is kind of a mystery to me. I
like the little melodic / quiet bits of their songs, where the singer
actually sings and I really
dislike all the screaming. I can take a little screaming now and
then... but in general its just a huge musical turn off for me.
Yeah, people seem to love 'em or hate 'em. I really like them, but my Dad doesn't enjoy being yelled at

I know what you mean about the actual singin parts being better.
Songs like "Lost in Hollywood" are my favourite, or Radio/Video where
they do cool harmonies and stuff.

Yeah it's the same way for me when I think about the band Tool. I
used to listen to them quite a lot about 7 years ago, and now I can't
handle their angrier/louder stuff, but I still love Maynard's singing
voice.

I guess that's why I should start listening to A Perfect Circle instead.

I'll forgive you... this time. Next time, I'm killing your family. I'm not sure if the sarcasm color isn't even enough for a line like that, but what can I do? NOTHING.

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass: Good stuff, it's George Harrison. Hah. I'm sure ReNo will love this review.

Haley Bonar - Haley Bryn Bonar: Her first CD that I luckily found on the Interweb since I'm not sure that you can buy it (except for something like ebay). Faster songs than her later stuff which is a good thing.

Magnolia Electric Co. - What Comes After The Blues: I think this one's 9 songs, I really only like 5, but those 5 are awesome. Basically the same band as Songs: Ohia, just under a different name. Alternative-country goodness.

Songs: Ohia - The Lioness: Lovely vocals combined with metaphorical lyrics that I'll never fully understand. Awwwwwwesome.

I've got more CDs than that that I could yap about but I don't know which ones I've listed before and I really don't want to be more redundant.

SOAD songs also seem to be quite ADD.
i completely agree

when he stops yelling randomly and goes all quiet their music is quite good, and this is not because i don't like loud music

FT if it's loud music you crave check out:

As I Lay Dying

Funeral for a Friend

Finch (not the new album but "what it is to burn" that album)

Thrice

Underoath (their drummer's good, plus he's the lead vocals)

Thursday

Rise Against, though not as heavy still good

all much better music than SOAD

Here's an amazing song: Thursday - Understanding in a Car Crash

I like Finch as well. Most of the stuff off that album is good.

I like Rise Against - Amber Changing

I'm not too familiar with the other bands, but good picks Fatstrings.

Got a couple of new albums recently;

The Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out
The debut (I think) album by The Kooks, this is a nice mix of playful indie rock with a bit of ska influence. Ska seems to be seeping into quite a few of these Brit rock bands lately - Arctic Monkeys, the Ordinary Boys (well, thats less seeping, more pouring!), The Kooks - and its a trend that gets my seal of approval  My highlights from this album are intro song "Seaside" (short acoustic track that doesn't really fit with the rest, but is a beautiful little song in my opinion), "See The World" (which I think is a single or something, and understandably so), "She Moves In Her Own Way" (a fairly light but upbeat romantic song that, frighteningly, makes me think "Cliff Richard" in a good way) and "If Only" (probably the hardest, rockiest of the lot). Vocally, and musically at times, they remind me a lot of Rx Bandits, and probably the most obvious other comparisons would be the Arctic Monkeys or Razorlight, so if you like any of them then do yourself a favour and check it out.

Hundred Reasons - Kill Your Own
I'm a bit disappointed with this so far. Granted, I've only given it a couple of listens through, but it seems to be far less jumpy and "fun" than their previous efforts. All the reviews I've seen are pretty glowing, saying this is their best so far, but I just can't see it. It seems to me like they are perhaps moving away from the emo/nu-metal mix that that had before and going more for straightforward rock, which makes some songs sound like they belong on a Foo Fighters album rather than here. Not that any of it is bad - its a pretty good album to be fair - it just isn't really what I was hoping for. On first listens through both their prior albums there were 3 or 4 songs that jumped out with hugely catchy choruses or uplifting rythms, but nothing here did that for me. Hopefully it will grow on me in time. My picks for now are intro track "Broken Hands", fastest offering "Live Fast, Die Ugly" which is pretty much their most aggressive song to date (as far as I can recall anyway), and "Feed The Fire" which is probably the most Foo's esque but still one of the better songs.

I had this to say...
ReNo said:
Got the new Arctic Monkeys album "Whatever you say I am, that's what I am not" today, and I've been enjoying it. It's just upbeat, jumpy, rough-around the edges rock music with punk and ska influences. No deep philosophical musings or pretentious lyrics, but plenty of lines that will strike a chord with young folks in the UK at any rate ("there's only music, so that there's new ring tones"). On first hearing their big hit "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" I was a bit worried they would have an album full of tracks that didn't live up to it, but instead most of the tracks are actually stronger than that one. Check out "You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Looking At Me", "From The Ritz To The Rubble", or "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured" (a track title that will no doubt get a smile from us gamers!), but to be honest most tracks are pretty indicative of their style. Far from the most varied of albums, but their one slow track "Riot Van" is probably the weakest of the lot so maybe the relentlessly upbeat approach was a wise move!
All in all, its good. Not sure if you will enjoy it or not, but if you can try and listen to one or two tracks before you take the plunge. As you say, things are expensive here in the UK

Found this about them on last.fm:
http://www.last.fm/music/Arctic+Monkeys/+wiki said:
Arctic Monkeys are a four-piece band from High Green, a suburb of Sheffield, England. The band's northern roots, often seen as a key element of the band's style, have seen them billed as a "northern The Libertines", while their unique sound and wry lyrics - often social commentaries - have been compared to the The Jam, Pulp and The Streets.

Their first actual release, Five Minutes With Arctic Monkeys
was set to be a hit, if only the label had remembered to put barcodes
on the sides of the cd covers! Because of this, the EP was unable to
enter the charts.

Their debut single, I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor, and the follow up When The Sun Goes Down, went straight to number one in the UK Top 40 Singles Chart.

The band's rise to success started in late 2004/early 2005 when demo
songs which had been handed out in CD form at gigs found their way onto
the internet. These demos rapidly spread among messageboards and
friends leading to a growing fanbase for the band.

The band's debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, holds the record for the largest first week sales of a debut album in the UK.
You can also listen to parts of a few of their songs here.

Btw, here's my top 10 artists from last week.

meant to post this a few days ago, but ive been busy.....took the wife to see joe satriani on the 3rd of april here in omaha....man o man.....best damn show ive seen in ten years....all you musician types out there will appreciate this set of factoids: not alot of stage show, just enough to really enhance the music...this boy provides enough drama on his own....even if yer not a musician, i suggest everyone should see him with Eric Johnson at least once....the technical proficiency displayed by both are amazing....i havent been that pumped before or after a show since i was a kid....and the best part, (im row two, orchestra section...in other words front row center by song two... ) joe reaches down and HANDS me a guitar pick, shakes my hand, and and points at me as he backs off with a huge s**t eating grin on his face.....man, ides of adolesance.... i

i highly reccommend this show to all....and id travel this time to see him, no questions asked...

Also ive listened to both of JAck Johnson's albums and have to say they are pretty good. (its good to have a little slow music every once in a while)

Discovered Feeder as well, they are decent.

Curious George? I don't think thats a Jack Johnson album - his three albums are called "In Between Dreams", "Brushfire Fairytales", and "On and On"

EDIT: I had a search and Curious George is a film soundtrack or something that he did. His three main albums are the ones I mentioned.

Got the Skindred album "Babylon (Special Edition)" this morning, and I really like it. If you haven't heard them, they are a ragga-metal band, which isn't a genre with a great deal of bands in it to be honest, at least not that I know of. I'm not all that keen on their heavier stuff (such as the song "Nobody" from the game Need For Speed Underground 2), but their more playful jumpy stuff is great. They are like a mix of 311, Rage Against the Machine, and King Prawn or something. Its basically rap-rock with a nice laid back reggae slant. Check out "Pressure" (which I think is/was a single?), "Selector" or "Set It Off" if you like the sound of it.

I'd better be getting my Nightmare of You album tomorrow - I ordered it a week ago

I really need to clean up my music folders apparently since the only artist I can actually recognize at the moment is Rocky Volotato, kind of like Jack Johnson with different vocals.
One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine

Well the Nightmare of You album finally arrived, and its pretty good. Nothing revolutionary, but its a solid indie rock / emo debut. Most of the songs are fairly generic and comparable, with a couple of poor and a couple of great exceptions. As usual, it seems to be the songs I'd already heard that are my favourites, but its probably just due to familiarity. If you fancy some cleanly produced indie rock that isn't whiney but should still appeal to emo fans, check them out. Try tracks "Why Am I Always Right?" or "I Want To Be Buried In Your Backyard" if you want to test them out first

Non-whiny emo? explodes I guess I was tired when I read it before 'cause I thought it was just another album by Skindred and I'm like "What, they're doing indie/emo now? DUBYA TEE EFF."

Well I'd say its more indie-rock than emo, but then emo is pretty much just indie rock thats whiney so I guess its not that far removed

It didn't really strike me as either, indie's got a pretty distinctive style (in theory). But I guess there's some people who call Bloc Party indie too so what can you do... make a new sub-genre! Yay! Nu-indie.

As far as I'm concerned music is music. I can't keep up with all the labels. If it's good I listent o it. If not I don't.

I agree with Spartan on that one.

Two albums I've recently got and listened to:

Kick - White Rose Movement
Meds - Placebo

Both pretty good and worth listening to, although they have their fair share of both good and bad tracks.

Yeah, it might be awkward to try and pidgeon hole bands into genres, but if we didn't do any sort of grouping/segmenting, then it would be hideous trying to find music we might like. Genres and comparisons with other groups help suggest to people what to expect and whether listening is worth their time. Music being "good" or "bad" is hardly enough of an indicator when musical taste is so subjective after all.

In recent years a thousand new little genres popped out of nowhere simply because bands started mixing styles without caring about genre limits. This is all nice and ok but often a new genre is created for a single band and later the name is used for other bands that are completely different and actually require another (new) genre name. To be honest, I prefere describing a band by comparing it to others. It's often the only way of defining a genre anyway.

I'd say that almost everything seems to be described as "Alternative" these days, which I suppose is fair enough, but you do start to wonder: an alternative to what?

listened (listening to in fact) the swedish duo The Knife. very good electronica/dance. i find it much better then traditional dancce as a lot of the songs have much more vocals.one of Jose Gonzalez's songs (heartbeat) is a cover from this duo. recommend someone checks them out, no one i know has heard of them
Bullet Control: $5000 for a bullet.

Tool's new album, 10,000 Days. It's bitchin'... a little weird at points, but definitely Tool and definitely bitchin'. I like track 10, "Right In Two" the most I'd have to say, it comes in third on my favorites, right after Ticks And Leeches and Schism.

Also select songs from other Tool albums, mostly from Lateralus (which IMO is the best Tool album).

Went to see NIN March 24th, was pretty sweet but would have been better with either better seats or general admission.
