So, me and some friends are developing some software and I would like
to set up a paypal account so people can donate. I just can't make it
clear from the information on the paypal site.
Ok, so I have to sign up for an account ... will that cost me anything ?
I just want to sign up, set up this merchant system and sit back. Do I
have to pay for anything ? Will they be taking money off my account ?
anyone had any experiences ?

i think generally speaking its a sound system to use, you just have to
be aware of PayPal fraud (common on ebay) and the fact that it has no
legal grounding with international laws/banks..
and no, afaik you dont have to pay to make an account to recieve donations. paypal is fairly safe, go for it

I think the seller has to pay a small fee, but the buyer pays nothing.
Don't know how it works for donations though. Accounts should be free,
but I think you'll have to pay for "certification". Might try looking
around at some of your favorite websites with Paypal donation systems
and ask how that works for them.
I like Paypal though, for the fairly small amount of eBay I do. Pretty good service.

when you sign up for paypal go to merchant tools and click the donation
link that is in the blurb on that page and that will guide you through
the process of setting up a donation button for your site

I've been using Paypal for 2 1/2 years, and I haven't had any problems at all.

Amazon also do a donation scheme, but I don't know any details about how it works.

So there's someone out there who's clever enough to steal credit card details, but not clever enough to get free porn?

I had to do that ages ago, but it's not really a problem... And $50 is a fairly small amount so hopefully it would go unnoticed and the guy could keep using your card!

I believe he's talking about the "pay for an ID card number" part ... possibly to buy porn off of ebay ...
