Well, I was doing a tut (for doors), I made my rooms, then made my door, and went to texture it. After I textured it, I kept getting an error saying that my comp load was very high, and I should lower my undo count in the tool options. I lowered it, but nothing. Whenever I click on my door brush, it also selects the wall behind it, and they constantly switch back and forth until I stop it.

Anyone know what the problem is? Just in case, my comp specs:

P4 2.8Ghz
256Mb Ram
Geforce MX4000

Thanks in advance

I haven't experienced this particular error, but I'll bet that the root cause is low RAM. 256MB on a 2.8 GHz system is like putting training wheels on a Porche IMO. I run a 1 GHz PIII with 256MB of RAM, and most everything I do is still RAM limited even with that slow-ass processor. That said however, Hammer works fine on my system. try checking your paging file. I keep mine ~1 GB.

Forgive me for sounding like an idiot, but what is the paging file? And where can it be found?

Here's what you do, you reduce your undo levels to about 10 through the options. You don't need many more, and having it really high will slow down any system. Go to 5 if you have to. If you're still experiencing slowdowns reduce the 3d viewing distance for brushes and models.

On the topic of undo levels, why the hell do they count selections as
undo-able actions now? 10 undo levels WOULD have been plenty in the
past, but now I find myself quickly running out of them.

Actually I think storing selections as undo levels are a good idea (Photoshop does it), especially with the selection bug- if you're trying to manipulate a large number of ungrouped solids and you deselect them for whatever reason it saves you the hassle of having to reselect them all! But yeah it was annoying at first, perhaps they could change it so that it only stores selections of more than one object at a time.

Your paging file is what the computer uses when it runs out of physical memory. Also known as virtual RAM. It is a piece of your hard disk which is reserved for storing overflow from your system's main memory, however once your computer starts using it heavily, applications will drag horribly because your HDD is nowhere near as fast as your RAM.

You can find the pagefile in the following way:

<BLOCKQUOTE dir=ltr style="MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px">
Right click in "My Computer" on your desktop.

Select "Properties" from the menu that pops up

Select the "advanced" tab in the system properties window you have just opened.

Under performance, there ought to be a "settings" button. Click it.

Select the "advanced" tab in the "performance options" window you have just opened. At the bottom there should be a box labeled "virtual memory" if the value stated is less than 500-600 MB, you need to increase it.

[/quote]
I'm not at all sure that this will help, but it may be a possibility. You can also do as Hammer suggests and reduce the number of undo cycles available. this will reduce the memory demand of the program, and probably help it to run more smoothly. You might also try opening task manager and ending all unnecessary processes while you are using hammer to free up more RAM.

Well, I lowered it to 5, it seems to be alright. It did give me the error, but that was only when I applied changes to an entity. It didnt give me the error every time I tried to click on something, like last time. Hopefully I will be able to put more into it without getting the error.

Oh, and Tracer, my paging file is at 720mb. I can always try raisingit later if I stillget errors.
