Deriving from my previous poll about HL1 on the DS,

<BLOCKQUOTE dir=ltr style="MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px">
Which new hand-held do you have the most hype for?

[/quote]
PSP -- http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20041027-4353.html (Not as detailed as the next)

Nintendo DS -- http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nintendo-ds.ars (Big 3 page review-- must read)

For those that prefere a pocket pc to the real thing, there's a spot for you.

Of coarse, I provided the best links I could get for these handhelds; but my school has big web blocker that blocks anything with "game" in its search field. Both reviews are from the same site, but the PSP is only feature; lacks the review.

PSP, but only if it gets hacked, and somebody finds a cheap way to give the thing some decent storage.

Currently neither of them interest me too greatly, but if I was to get either it would probably be the PSP. The large screen, power, and fact I almost always prefer sony systems to Nintendo these days, means its just more tempting to me. I'll wait and see what games appear for both and what the price drops to before I think about getting one, but then since I never get handhelds, its probably never gonna happen anyway.

Nintendo DS, mainly because am still a Nintendo Fan boy at heart. but the price has to be a consiteration.

PSP price being around ?200 and the problems with PSP battery life lead me away from getting one

I prefer the DS mainly because they're keep backwards compatability, and I have sources that can get me uber-great deals on the new systems by trading in the old (even better than normal re-buy stores offer, etc). It makes it so I have a large collection of Original GameBoy games up through Advance cartridges that I can still play with only one system. Beautiful.

Actually, is the DS backwards compatable?

Although I think I may pick up a PSP once they come out and reduce in price a bit.

It plays GBA games minus system link multiplayer.

It does not however play game boy & GBC games

If it can play GBA games wouldn't it play GB games by inheritance? I mean, the GBA doesn't say it plays GB games only GBA and GBC, yet it does.

Also, if two people have a DS and are playing a linkable game you can link up using the wireless Ethernet.

I would imagine that's how it all works, but I don't have one so I wouldn't be able to say for sure.

Right now, I'm not too crazy for either hand held, if anything the DS. As I've said before, unless the PSP has some games to show for the price, it may have merit. Otherwise, why would I want to buy an incredibly expensive piece of hardware that is made to break?

Lol that's the whole point of calling it a HANDHELD. Notice the words "hand" and "held" within the name.

I disagree! Everything that says it's Pocket hardly ever fits into your pocket. If it does it looks stupid as hell.

I'm interested in the PSP because it looks like it could be a cool all around DivX-MP3 player for long plane trips etc. Screw the games.

That's what I was thinking, but from reading the article, they had a picture of the new cartridges, and they seemed to be a completely different format. But mabye it was just a bad pic or something.

The DS cartridges are about as thin as a graham cracker and about 1 inch by 1 inch in size. They are very small and have better graphics than N64.

I hope they port OOT onto the thing. tehehe

Not to eager to buy any of them, but if I did, I'd probably go for a PSP. The price is a catch though  .

I read somewhere that the PSP would drain more battery when playing
movies, and would only last for a couple of hours. That would mean that
the battery wouldn't last through a longer movie and that would suck
pretty hard.

I guess watching LOTR on a 2 inch screen would suck only when the batteries run out 2/3 of the way through.

Does anyone know if "Final Fanatasy: Advent Children" will be released exclusively for PSP?

FF is a good RPG series but for god sakes it's got to die someday. It might just end up lasting long after the universe has emploded.

Advent Children is a movie, not a game.

Monqui: hmm. My main logic behind it though is that the Advanced support, since the only different between advanced and color or GB games is format (I'd imagine). Even if the DS games have a different pin layout, if the unit it self has Advanced support it has a slot for the other formats as well (same port). However, if the DS software supports those other formats is another question (the only question, really).

I wouldn't see why it wouldn't, every hand held Nintendo has ever made is backwards compatible, why stop now?

I'd really like to see their next console backwards compatible too. It would sell like hotcakes if it was.

I honestly think the reason why the advanced and PS2 do so well is their backwards compatibility (Even though there are really good games on either alone). Even if there were no good games, the novelty feels nice.

Nah, that makes sense, but I didn't know that the DS even HAD GBA support. I'm sure I think like you in the sense that if it supports GBA, then it'll support all of 'em.
