Really dont think anyones apt to that, since no one really wants to see
their map messed with (at least I don't!) BTW this belongs in the
general board.

ok.
first off,
i'd like to address the "someone is going to steal my maps; oh noooos!!!!!111one" comment i have been getting.
1) it's more about sharing than stealing.
2) if someone were to take my completed map (or incompleted one) and copy it outright, then it's STILL my map.
3) if someone were to copy my map and modify it, then it's NOT my map anymore. (iceworld vs. iceworld 2k, for example)
secondly,
sorry for posting in the "wrong" section, i just figured that
people who don't map (the General forum people) would not really care
about a site that hosts vmf's. eh, maybe i'm wrong.
third,
yes it's a rather sharp looking site, there are a few cosmetic
things we are working on. hopefully we'll have an improved interface as
well. i am not a web designer, but i am working closely with one; he's
great.
thanks for the comments.

Don't worry about posting in the wrong thread - I can understand why
you would have been a bit confused, but the way these forums work means
the editing ones should only be used for actual questions, not
discussions with no answers.
I think sharing sources of maps is a good idea, but I also understand
peoples concerns about having their work popping up in other people's
levels. I'm all for giving out some of my previous works for
demonstrative purposes, but I wouldn't want any of it being ripped out
and placed in another level.

thank you for your support, snarkpit.
i don't know if you're aware, but there is a decompiler for source, it
doesn't yet decompile the geometry very well, but i have a feeling it
will.
i don't know if you've played any of the remade cs 1.6 levels (for
source - various assaults, various infernos, etc...), but people
are "ripping" content from them already. as far as being credited for
your work. i'm sure that if someone uses your geometry they will give
you props. I'd like to think we have a pretty honest community.
as far as my maps are concerned. rip away. i'll recognize my work. and
at the end of the day, that's more maps for me (and our community) to
play.
i understand your concerns, and thank you for your ongoing support.

i'm sorry, i think you've gotten me all wrong. i'm not trying to upset
you nor am i upset. if you are afraid of people stealing your work,
that's all good. you don't have to post. if you do wish to post only
"test maps", that too is fine; i have a section for that.
i am a strong proponent of opensourcing, i believe that it benefits the community to make source files available to the public.
the decompiler is not quite there, but it's only in 0.72 status, it
will be improved upon (unless the developer quits or dies, of course).
i honestly do not worry about my work being stolen, the only exception
is the mapping contest(s), and in that case; i too would not post my
vmf until the contest was over.
i guess i don't understand why people are so worried about 'map theft'.
valve released de_cbbl.vmf, and dm_lockdown.vmf. and i haven't seen a
ton of thieves claiming that they created them. (although i did see one
guy who modified cbbl, and made a cool custom map [i'll post a link if
you want]).
take care, and thanks for your continued support

Being a great fan of "open source", and liking the site design, I'm all
for this. BUT, please let's not turn this into a flame war thread (it
always starts with diplomacy, then gets nasty). Some like the idea,
others don't. 'nuff said.

Actually, I'm pretty sure if you posted your final map here THEN released a source file, people would know the map was yours. This site's got some pretty good connections and someone would have to get it from here first anyway.

Dam why is everyone getting edgy about this.
Its very simple if you dont want somone to "steal" your map then dont post it.
It's like saying i really hate this T.V. program! - Then change the channel.
I like open source, personally if i posted my map and someone re did it i'd be pretty happy, i mean they liked it so much they actually took the time edit it.
don't think i would worry about some noob trying to change my map either, cos they are way to complex for someone to tackle with very little knowlegde of Hammer.

Is open-sourcing of contest maps allowed?

you'd have to check the specific contest rules for the answer to that.
but i don't see why you wouldn't be able to. it may give you a
disadvantage (by letting other contestants see your map), but no more
than posting a bsp.
p.s. Rof's decompiler has a new version 0.75 out now

Actually, the contest rules say the map can't be released ... at all. At least, that's what the rules "said", not sure if they actually mean "You cannot post your map".

Just pointing out that is only a theme for phpbb, opposed to a newly designed style.
