Ok I have 512mb of RDRAM  yes I said RDRAM I hate it but I dont have
too much money so I was looking on EBAY and found and auction for 1 gig
of PC600 Memory.......so! What I was thinking is that My MOBO has PC800
RAM in in right now and I wanna know if my mobo can support PC600
memory.....

This is the ChipSet:Intel i850E

This is the SouthBridge: 82801BA (ICH2)

It should. But everything will be running at the slower speed.

Also, that's some high grade ram. I don't understand what it's doing in a dell though. Rombus Dynamic Random Access Memory is used for "high end graphics and servers".

It's also pricey. About $100 for a 256MB stick. Well, if the current ram in your system will clock down without trouble, there's no need to worry. In any case if it doesn't work, just take it out! You'd still have a gig of ram running at 600 Mhz.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

SuperCobra aren't you the same person who spent $8000 on a full license for XSI or something, and also claimed to have the best PC anyway? I'm sure it was you...

The intel website, or Dell support should give you your answer on whether or not you can handle PC600. I'd say yes though, most mobo's are backwards compatible to some extent. But like Crono said your PC800 RAM would be clocked down to PC600, assuming it can.

all that dell do, usually, is brag about a great processor but everything else sucks. the one that i got had an okay pentium 4 at the time but one of the worst graphics cards you can get that isnt integrated and only 128mb ram. i could do nothing in the way of gaming on it. i spent money upgrading it and it now can just run hl2.

quoting 'howstuffworks.com':

RDRAM
Rambus dynamic random access memory
is a radical departure from the previous DRAM architecture. Designed by Rambus, RDRAM uses a Rambus in-line memory module (RIMM), which is similar in size and pin configuration to a standard DIMM. What makes RDRAM so different is its use of a special high-speed data bus called the Rambus channel. RDRAM memory chips work in parallel to achieve a data rate of 800 MHz, or 1,600 MBps. Since they operate at such high speeds, they generate much more heat than other types of chips. To help dissipate the excess heat Rambus chips are fitted with a heat spreader, which looks like a long thin wafer. Just like there are smaller versions of DIMMs, there are also SO-RIMMs, designed for notebook computers.

it sounds pretty damn good why dont you like it?

ok would you like to ONLY be able to spend 350$ for 1 gig of ram on
your PC when if you had a mobo that supported DDR ram get you a gig for
85$? Go do your research. Dell was trying to make RDRAM a success and
dell just wanted YOUR money for this stuff and they got alot of peoples
money.....RDRAM is REALLY hard to find nowadays and none of the newer
mobos support it

since RDRAM has the advantage of being so fast maybe take two of the RDRAM sticks out put in two 'normal' 512mb Ram sticks in and boom you got 1.2GB of Ram with the added bonus of 256mbs of it being significantly faster.

wait, do they sell 1gb sticks of ram now or do you still have to get 512x2?

Yeah, RDRAM, in general, is faster then DDR. It's the multiplier or something like that. Be glad they didn't put a Xeon in it because then you'd need ECC ram which is really expensive.

Yes, they sell gig sticks. 2GB sticks too.

But, it is expensive, 256 Mb stick ranges from $95 (PC600) to $275 (PC800)

But, it's Dell's fault, since they specifically picked this chipset for their computers that will be sold to common households, thus making it easy for them to make money if they want to upgrade, since it's very difficult and expensive to do it on your own with these parts.

If you think this is bad ... oh man. You should see some of the things HP does. Like, having a filestructure on the HDD such that once it is wiped (partition deleted) it can't re-partitioned without HP tools, which are only available to HP. They all use onboard video too. Most of the boards are Micro-ATX form factor (meaning even if they have an AGP slot, and most don't, you wont be able to fit a video card in there, not to mention other drives)

It's really a bitch the way they set it up, but I suppose it's to protect their investment. If they built normal computers that people could easily use, they'd lose money. I believe Gateway did before they switched to micro-atx. At least that's the only thing I can think of why they were just gone for 3 years.

The only saving grace any of these companies have, except HP and Compaq, is that their first party monitors are usually really nice. The old Gateway monitors were terrible, but the new ones are pretty nice.

Just to ramble a little more: At Best Buy I found a 17" widescreen LCD Mac monitor for $299. Sadly, I don't have $299, otherwise I'd get one.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Well it exists in all the speeds and form factors, but, ones you can buy are all DDR. RDRAM is more expensive. NewEgg has a 2GB stick PC2700 (333Mhz) for 300, 400, and 500 dollars. Which is ridiculous, because they all have lifetime warranties and surprise surprise the $500 one is Corsair. Can you guess which one is the $400 one? It starts with a 'K'.

I suspect people don't carry anything faster in that size since it's expensive. They wouldn't make money carrying a part no one can afford. That's why you don't see it anywhere.

Any other questions?
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

What about eMachines? Their case is so non-standard that in order to replace the noisy power supply, you have to saw a hole in the metal case to install it.

But I bet very few SnarkPitters have eMachines anyways. They are for noobs and non-geeks.

So even if it was possible to add DDR RAM for cheap, it would defeat the purpose of having RDRAM in the first place.

Dell had nothing to do with it. If you want to blaim anyone, blaim Intel. RDRAM was pretty much all their doing, trying to beat AMD's hyper transport system. AMD was and still is kicking Intel's ass when it comes to memory bandwidth. Intel tried to cut a corner and released a proprietery RAM system to play catch up. Only problem is, like most things intel does, instead of taking the slow, cost effective route to solving the problem, they just brute forced it with expensive components. Unlike AMD who has such a small market share and has to make do with less, Intel, made do with more and then passes on the expense to it's customers.

Dell notoriously is an Intel only company, for about 1 month they evaluated offering AMD, but then decided to just stick Intel. So for a good amount of time there, most Intel systems were RAMBUS especially high performance PCs.

The only person you have to blaim is yourself for buying into an expensive performance boosting technology that would cost you in the long run.

And here I was thinking RDRAM is created by RAMBUS.

You got part of it somewhat right though. Intel and RAMBUS had a
strange agreement early on that forced Intel chipsets to use RDRAM.
That fell out after RAMBUS became a general pain-in-the-ass.

PS: As an ex Intel Fanboy I can tell you that Intel focused more on the
cache bandwidth issues while AMD focused on memory bandwidth. Both
approaches seem to have comparable effect on final performance. Intel's
issues are elsewhere, like core temperatures and their harebrained
Hardware DRM scheme.

Edit: Typos... Bah.
