During my interview for a position on Insurgency (www.insmod.net), I was asked "Do you have an online portfolio or something?" I had to answer no, which was not a very good thing. After I was "let go", I set out to get a website, before something like that happened again. So, here it is..

http://www.simonburford.com/

It is not finished yet, so it only has one working page, but if you could give me feedback on the colors, design, etc... that would be great.

Thanks

Looks very tastefully designed and appropriately "graphic designer-ish". I like it

You could achieve this without tables and even without using graphics for text (the navigation tabs, and yes, even the transparency does not require images), but that's just me being a standards and accessibility zealot

An "interview for a position"? Do they pay you or something?

The website looks like the perfect portfolio site. I'm not sure about the flash part loading the images. You should at least have an option for pure HTML. Although the design looks rather error proof anyway.

Yea, pretty much perfect, I'd say. Well done! Just make sure you get it finished. That's harder than it sounds.

No, they don't pay you  What I mean by Interview is they ask you questions and such.. And position, thats what you do on the mod..

I'm not sure about the flash part loading the images.

It's not flash, it's javascript

Heh, thanks. I will get it done

Keep an eye on those images. XAT is a web designers best friend.

XAT also has a program to show web designers how their pages will load on 56k.

A thumbnail should never be that big. If it is, then what its linked to will most likely be oversized as well.

A web page should show a persons diligence to the finer details. If they are sloppy, it will reflect on them in other areas as well.

Good luck with it.

The best things in life, aren't things.

Very nifty Javascripting, indeed.
If you got some good stuff to show, this website will be very professional-looking.

Good luck with it !

I was in INS mod once, knew the guy who started it, Argyll. They are a bit foolish now and then, and don't listen very often- I kept telling them I was too busy to map and that I would when the summer holidays came. 1 Day before the holidays they kicked me out for not doing any work... they kinda missed out on 4 months worth of my mapping, but it didn't bother me- I just got a job and earned some money instead!

As for the website, like the effects, unfortunately (and honestly) I hate the look. It looks like it was made in those 10 minute website programs on Mac computers. My flatmates website from last year looked the same as yours

I think it looks good, quite professional, and I like the color scheme.

It looks really good ... but I agree with Gollum. More code less images. That way it'll be universal, as in, resolution independant.

My only gripe is ... that banner is friggin huge!! It takes up almost half the space on a 1024x768 resolution.

Maybe add some cool mouseover for the menu links (code).

I know you can do it based on that awesome window.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Thanks all

Orph: Sorry, I'll make a 56k friendly version of my website...

Myrk: That would be quite the fluke if they both look/looked the same

Crono: Unfortunately, I can't code for beans  Maybe one day I'll learn enough code to make a new website.. As for the banner, I'll get my brother to fix the size..<br style="color: white;">

THat's some clever Javascripting there then. I thought it was Flash or something.
Only grips I have with the image viewer is that the navigation in it is not-so-obvious. I've seen this method before and it's a nice one, but it's not immediatly visible to the casual user.

As for overall look, the site strikes me as too clean. That top is only grey. Granted, it's stylished, but also easily seen as boring or a quick job. It's not a bad design, but too simple for a designer I think. It looks more like a blog site right now, except for the content of course.

Keep it up!

Indeed. I shouldn't have stopped with web design. I'm seriously behind now, lol.
