What I mean is perhaps make an anonymous 2006 mapping poll on the front page. So we get an idea on how many people are entering for Source or Goldsource so to speak. (HL2 Engine, or HL1 engine) Because as of now, it seems as though only 2 people are entering for HL1.. but perhaps theres more in private.
Correct me if I am wrong Gwil:

Any "Front Page" coding is 100% within Lep's purview. There is nothing we the admin can arrange that would be a poll on the front page.

This competition will end with us users voting. It will be 100% on the honor system and will be within a thread saying "I VOTE FOR SO AND SO's MAP"

I haven't determined whether each person will only get to vote for their favorite, or if each member will vote for their 3 favorites but in the end, the maps that win "1st, 2nd and 3rd" place will be from the total votes given.

Lastly, if and when it is determined how many maps received are HL1 and/or HL2, then we will all decide on placements for both. It would make no sense to compete the engines against each other since the "fairness factor" wouldn't permit it.

On an unrelated subject. I do not want to flood the front page with competition news so I am more/less doing so weekly.

If anyone notices that I have forgotten to post news about a members map PLEASE point it out so I can rectify the oversight.

This image uploading and posting is hard on my connection and I keep noticing people I forgot about. This is entirely unintentional. I need your help.

Thanx guys.

I've only just spotted Naticus' entry. Really nice go at re-making Hearst Castle - I actually recognised it from the in-game screenshots! Interestingly, the indoor pool is one of the few parts that was added later and so isn't quite old enough to be classed as a listed building. As a result, you are actually walking on 23-carat gold..!

Anyhoo, carry on.

Listed buildings you say?
This sounds like the equivalent of the U.S. National Historic
Landmarks. You might be surprised to
here that landmarks in the U.S.
don?t carry as many protections as in the UK. Did you ever see Planet of the Apes? Remember that scene at the end of the movie
where we see a mostly buried Statue of Liberty?
One of our most sacred landmarks was available for ?creative?
interpretation.

Or maybe you?ve seen Independence Day where aliens literally
blow up the White House. Our landmarks
do have protections against destruction, just not in a virtual artistic way. The National Historic Preservation Act of
1966 protects the well being of the real physical landmarks. However, this act contains nothing on
copyrights.

To find the answers there we must look to the section 102 of
the U.S. Copyright Act. The Copyright Act
will protect buildings created on or after December 1, 1990.
Any architectural work built before that date carries no copyright
protections in the U.S. That means the Roman Pool, and all of the
buildings on the Hearst Estate for that matter, carry no copyright protection
(save maybe a new wing on the visitors center). The same should also be true for artistic recreations of buildings such as the White House, Lincoln Memorial, or
the Hoover Dam.

Then there are places where UK landmarks are shipped here so we have to look at them too. :heee:

I've been watching this while I
was supposed to be mapping, thus I'm starting to be in a hurry...

Edit: Here's the true state of my map, due to some real life issues,
I'm seriously lagging behind my schedule for this map. I hope that I'll
make it though.

Looking good Scythe! Some really good brush work there. I like all of the detailing you've done surrounding the hill. Especially that rear portion with the steps. Very well done.

 But it remains to be seen if that darned thing even compiles once I
get it done... I smell MAX_MAP_CLIPNODES error...

Pvt: How big is that area? clipnodes can be a crisis if the
clip nodes aren't optimized. Clipping off unreachable areas
will help, and so will clipping off "tidbits" of areas that the player
generally won't bother to explore. Also, try changing your
clipping type. Sometimes that can save you a few clip nodes here
and there.

Edit: Yea, like Insane said, cliff texture is pretty repetitive  Scaling it up a bit may help.

G.Ballblue and Mr. INSANE: The
texture I'm using is one of those random tiling ones(
-0blabla,-1blabla, etc), but yes I agree on scaling it up nevertheless.
The map is roughly one quarter of the whole mapping space in
hammer(from top down view). Personally I think some of the terrain is
currently too bland, but since I'm running out of time I've
decided to leave it be. I'm also discarding my plans on adding some
custom prop models as once again I don't have time to make them before
the deadline.

Naticus: I love that map. I might even venture into HL2 mapping once I get this competition map out of the way.

On as side note: This is first
map in a long long time I've done without doing any layout drawings
beforehand. I hope it works when it's time to compile.

I was wondering. Does anyone besides me think its important to clarify which website are represented for the entrants?

I think the competition will end fairly no matter, but some of the entrants are members of multiple sites and... Were so prior to the competition beginning. I for one do not want to look up join up dates to see who is whom.

Its rare for Snarkpit to have outsiders in any competition. In fact, I think this is a first.

Opinions?

Orph, you did a good job of promoting the contest to other sites. I found out about it through your post at mapcore. As far as entrants representing certain forums, I don?t think taking allegiance to a particular forum is important for purposes of this contest. Ultimately, what forums you belong to and participate in should have no bearing on how your work is judged. If it were a tie breaker situation, it might be fitting to look to other criteria such as forum involvement, be it with Snarkpit or otherwise.

If there happens to be someone who knows me from a particular forum, I would much rather have that person vote for the best map rather than a vote along forum lines alone.

I don't have an issue with people from numerous sites; I use both the
SP and Sven-Coop sites respectively. (Not entirely sure
what you're getting at about this, though) On the topic of
outsiders: I suppose it could seem a bit odd for someone who has
never been here before to enter into the competition, but aren't
competition supposed to turn a blind eye to things like that?
It's about the map, not the mapper.

Good thoughts guys.. My only concern was if in the event someone cried foul. I feel that the contest will come off honest but.. I do like to cover my ass.. Figuratively speaking.

So far, I think each site has a fair representation of effort and sportsmanship.

had a run around in it, especially the custom materials with e.g. the reflecting blue tiles make it nice, good job.

right now there seem to be multiple rooms, e.g. the bathroom with the showers vs the pool room etc. what room are you going to use for the competition?

I would like to add one thought:

If I were you, I'd get a confirmation of entrance at least 3 days prior to the deadline.

It would be a crying shame to miss out on some trivial deadline error.

On a side note... Can I have a showing of hands of who is entering again. I would like to get a feel for the engines being represented.

Thanx.

OK, this has been in the back of my mind for days but tonight it moved to the forefront of my thinking.

Since Lep is not available, how are we going to make all these maps so all the members have access to them?

Surely we will not grant access to the Gmail account.

Anyone besides me thought of this small issue yet?

My map I was not going to release publically until the 30th -- wasn't that the rule anyway? Anyway, HLRSE.net is quite a generous host for anyone who does SC mapping, and since I do sc mapping, I get a deal ;D

That is, were you refering to having them availble for download?

On a final note: I plan to re-send that e-mail by the end of tonight, by tomorrow. You will soon have another e-mail, only this time, it will provide a dl link.

I could also help host maps if necessary, plenty of space through my webserver. Although I don't know if that would be appropriate considering I have an entry in the compo. Maybe there is a free download site out there that doesn't require any sort of registration or outrageous wait times...

My only concern is, without Lep, we have no hosting here.

I thought about this all day and the same problem kept coming up. "How can I get these out?"

One of the maps is 19 megs.. I have 56k and cannot really host it.

How about we figure out how many maps there are, then grant a reliable source to the Gmail account and they can fetch them for hosting.

Would that work?

That sounds fair to me. It will be hard to deem me reliable given that I haven't been around the mapping community too long, but if you all deem me worthy I would be more than happy to assist with hosting.

Curiouser and curiouser..

Anyone know who Evilis is?

He sends two emails.. Part 2 of 3 and part 3 of 3 but inside is part 1 of 3 and part 3 of 3.

I am so confused.

So far I have:
Naticus sent a file.
Kasperg sent a file.
Mr.Insane sent a file.
GBallBlue sent an email with no link or attachment.
Doodle sent an email with a link
and
Mark Holbrook with his mysterious Evilis confusion.

We have but 5 days.. Seal'em and shipp'em fellas.

The best things in life, aren't things.

My entry (HL2 ... ps: am i going to be the only SP "oldie" representing HL2? )

Managed to squeeze this out in between exams :/

It's a continuation of my usual style, this time exploring a "modularity" concept. i.e. making a fairly complex design using a handful of building blocks, with selfmade materials in this case.

Feedback is, as always, welcome and appreciated; here, in it's profile, or pm. (No promises for updates, these exams have been killing me for a month and they're still not over :/ )

My only concern is, without Lep, we have no hosting here.
I thought about this all day and the same problem kept coming up. "How can I get these out?"

One of the maps is 19 megs.. I have 56k and cannot really host it.

How about we figure out how many maps there are, then grant a
reliable source to the Gmail account and they can fetch them for
hosting.

Would that work?
If I speak to Monqui I can probably host them on my site (gwil.org).
Would just need to alert him to the extra bandwidth usage and it should
be ok.

Goddamnit... I though I could send the damn thing today, but I'll have
to postpone it till tomorrow. I have some trouble with compiling.
Mainly getting VIS run trough. I thought that I'd get away with the
openness by making the map small, but it seems that I was wrong. Oh
well... I bet the f**ker will work with -fast on it.

This is definedly my last HL map for a while. Time to go Source for me.

OK, this has been in the back of my mind for days but tonight it moved to the forefront of my thinking.

Since Lep is not available, how are we going to make all these maps so all the members have access to them?

Surely we will not grant access to the Gmail account.

Anyone besides me thought of this small issue yet?
It will be on snarkpit FTP when you want it there- tell me when and Lep will upload it.

I don't mean to be a nudge here, but today is the 28th for Marylanders. Would it be possible for Orph to give us an update on who's e-mails he has?

I'm writing here just to inform that I sent my crappy entry into the
e-mail adress provided above. Don't hurt me too badly, I ran out of
time and had to do a quick and dirty salvage op.

I would also like to know if there is a specific time for the deadline, such as midnight tomorrow night.

I'll stick my neck out here and say 1st August, 12pm, GMT.

Any entries past that point to the designated email will be refused. If
you can't figure if you're in/out, go check Windows clock and timezones
 • that will tell you.
