<span name="Konabody">"There are probably quite a number of useful
things you could do with stealth for the military," said researcher
John Pendry, a physicist at Imperial College London.

<span>More mundane applications also include hiding obstacles --
"for example, one may wish to put a cloak over the refinery that is
blocking your view of the bay," said researcher David Schurig, a
physicist at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Moreover, objects
invisible to electromagnetic fields are isolated from them as well.
"You may want to protect something from electromagnetic interference," he added.
</span></span>
Any thoughts? Possibilities or fears? Please share. Personally I am
afraid of new kind of warfare raising its nasty head in form of stealth
ICBMs and other tools of mass destruction. But it could be just me...
Nevertheless an intresting topic.

Read about this a while ago in Popular Science, good 'ol light refraction. I'm not too worried about "stealth ICBMs" unless radar can't pick 'em up either... either way it'll blow the s**t out of you and you can't really stop it, y'know? Cool stuff, regardless.
One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine

<span name="Konabody"><span>Cloaking devices may also get designed against electric and magnetic fields as well, Pendry said. Scientists might also be capable of engineering
devices vs. acoustic waves as well. "This in fact would be much
simpler," said researcher Ulf Leonhardt, a theoretical physicist at the
University of St. Andrews in Scotland. "One could imagine applications
against sonar as well as things we can't imagine."</span></span>
This made me worry as if you can make those materials "invisible" to
radar a stealth attack with weapons like ICMBs become possible.<span name="Konabody"></span>

It probably is a fake.

I saw that system on tv a while back. They were describing using projectors and cameras to cloack obstacles in the time of war. They described it as the closest we may get to actually turning something invisible, untill we can create millions of tiny cameras and light diodes that mimick exactly what a peron would see on the other side of you.

Quick question. If you were cloak, say an aircraft, and all the light gets refracted around it, how would the pilot be able to see outside?

Of course thats just cloaking for the naked eye. They would also need to be able to cloak heat and electronic signatures to be completely effective, not to mention radar which still detects an object being present. I'd say its still a while off. Besides, why are they spending time on cloaking devices, I expressely ordered they focus all attention on the creation of a Holodeck  .

If you actually read the article, you would have seen that they're starting out cloaking from microwaves (ie, RaDAR) and working up to higher frequencies (like IR (heat) and visible light), because higher frequencies are more difficult to cloak from.

I'm actually at work and don't really have too much time to read other stuff, my comment was really just a quick response to Y2kben's comment about visible cloaking, which is relatively limited without the other cloaking types I mentioned, and you confirmed were in the article. Thanks for that confirmation, and its interesting to note that it is easier to hide the mass of an object on radar than to hide its physical appearance to the naked eye. I appreciate your enthusiasm and interest in enlightening me to said info.

Yeah, what I saw on Tv was just what it was, a prototype; an idea not at all ready for any aplication. The people where trying to demonstrate a simple idea, but where not feasable.
I never said that they managed to hide every other signiture besides the visual. But if you think about it, would many people bother trying to look at a field with infrared gogles hoping to find an invisible house? Not the common man.
You know, I've actually got nothing to say

Good point! The pilot would not be able to see out, because no light would reach his eyes.
The same applies for invisibility cloaks using this principle. No-one can see you, but you can't see anyone either!

There might be ways round this. If nothing else, you could reveal a very small portion of the object -- enough for eyes or a tiny camera, say. Alternatively, you could use other wavelengths for vision -- if the device was cloaking visible light, then you could use infrared to see, perhaps.

I'm not sure how difficult it would be to cloak infra-red as well once you figured out how to cloak normal light.
